Yankees give Sandman a magical sendoff

NEW YORK -- Mariano Rivera sat all alone at the end of the dugout late Thursday night. The game was over, the Rays were celebrating their victory on the field and the Yankees had already retreated to the clubhouse.

But Rivera stayed on the bench for a moment, his cap in his hands, staring off into the distance. He had just pitched for the final time at Yankee Stadium, and he was clearly trying to take in the moment.

Then, with much of the sellout crowd still in the Stadium and still on its feet, Rivera emerged, broke through a sea of photographers and walked to the mound. He toed the rubber, got down on one knee and grabbed some dirt.

Seconds later he walked off that mound, ending his illustrious career.

"It definitely was a magical moment," Rivera said after the Yankees' 4-0 loss to the Rays. "I've had an opportunity to play for 19 years and give the best of my talents and my ability to this organization. Tonight it paid off. The fans, they definitely appreciate that. My family, my wife, my kids, the fans -- it was amazing. A great night. We lost, so I don't know how I'm saying that, but it was a great night."

Rivera entered the game in the eighth inning with runners on first and second and one out and the Yankees trailing by four runs, but the situation hardly mattered.

The 48,675 fans in the Stadium all rose to their feet when manager Joe Girardi walked out of the dugout and signaled to the bullpen. Bob Sheppard's voiced introduced Rivera, Metallica's "Enter Sandman" blared over the public-address system and No. 42 jogged out of the Yankees' bullpen one last time.

He tipped his cap to the crowd and to the Rays, who'd come out of their dugout to pay tribute, then proceeded to retire designated hitter Delmon Young and center fielder Sam Fuld on six pitches.

"I've been with Mo since '96," an emotional Girardi said. "Had a lot of great times. He made my job fun, he made my job easy. But probably more important than that, he made all our lives better. And we'll miss him."

The Yankees recorded two hits in the bottom of the eighth, but Rivera wasn't in the dugout to see either of them. Although he would normally watch the team bat from the bench, he spent this particular evening sitting in the trainer's room, trying to regain his composure.

"Everything started hitting me from there," he said. "All the flashbacks, from the Minor Leagues to the big leagues, all the way to this moment. It was a little hard. I was able to compose myself and come back out."

Rivera needed just seven pitches to record the first two outs of the ninth inning, getting catcher Jose Lobaton to ground out to the pitcher's mound and shortstop Yunel Escobar to pop out to second base. Then something special happened.

Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter walked out of the dugout to remove their longtime teammate and friend from the game. Pettitte signaled to the bullpen -- Matt Daley finished the game -- and Jeter took the ball from Rivera and told him it was "time to go."

An emotional Rivera hugged both Pettitte and Jeter as the rest of the infielders surrounded him. With tears in his eyes, he walked off the mound, waving his cap to the crowd before embracing Girardi on the top step of the dugout.

After Rivera hugged the rest of his teammates and coaches in the dugout, the sellout crowd coaxed him out for his final Yankee Stadium curtain call.

"Thank God that [Pettitte and Jeter] came out," he said. "I don't know how I got those two guys out. It was amazing; I was trying to stop. I don't know what I was trying to do. It was totally a different feeling.

"They both came to get me out, and I was thankful they came out. … I needed them there, and they were there."

Girardi came up with the plan to send Pettitte and Jeter to the mound during the eighth. He approached home-plate umpire Laz Diaz after the inning to see if he was allowed to send a player to remove a pitcher and, after getting the OK from crew chief Mike Winters, asked if he could send two.

Both umpires agreed.

"I really appreciate that, because I think it made the moment even more special for Mo," Girardi said. "Two guys that have been linked to him a long time, came up through the Minor Leagues, have been through a lot together. I think it made the moment even more special."

"I thought it was cool. It was cool to be a part of. I had never taken a pitcher out of the game before," Jeter said. "I'm glad I got to be the one to take him out with Andy. If you're going to take a guy out, it might as well be Mo. I'm happy I was able to do it. Like I said before, we've all grown up together. It's too bad that good things have to come to an end."

"My first thought was, 'Ahh, I don't know. That might be a little weird,'" Pettitte said. "Then everybody on the bench, all the guys, were like, 'You've got to do it.' I'm so glad we did. Just a great moment. The emotion of him and us, to be able to be out there and share that with him, it was awfully cool. It's going to be something that obviously I'll never forget."

It was an emotional night for Pettitte, too, as it was also his final game in Yankee Stadium after making his last start in the Bronx on Sunday, against the Giants. In fact, after Rivera was removed from the game, the crowd also coaxed Pettitte out of the dugout before the bottom of the ninth for his own curtain call.

"I didn't expect for [Rivera] to be quite so emotional," Pettitte said. "He broke down and just gave me a bear hug, and I just bear-hugged him back. He was really crying. He was weeping. I could feel him crying on me. I think I was just telling him, 'Man, you've been so awesome to play with.' Just sharing stuff with him that I've already told him and he knows. Just telling him that I appreciate it and I love him. It's just been an honor to play alongside him."

The Rays exited their dugout and applauded Rivera again when he was taken out of the game.

"As much history as I've seen with this team, that was, hands down, the coolest," said Rays starter David Price, who surrendered Jeter's 3,000th hit. "It's not just because we won. Just because of the player that he is and the way that he's conducted himself. Just the complete class act. And he should be the last person to ever wear 42. He deserves that right."

Rivera pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings in his final Yankee Stadium appearance, and he'll finish his career with a Major League-record 314 saves in his home ballpark. The outing dropped his career ERA to 2.209, carrying him past Eddie Cicotte (2.210) for the best ERA in history for a pitcher who has pitched more than 1,000 innings.

But Rivera's final moments in pinstripes won't be about stats or numbers. They will be about the emotional end of a storied 19-year career in the Bronx.

"I was bombarded with emotions and feelings that I couldn't describe," Rivera said. "Everything hit at that time. I knew that that was the last time, period. I never felt something like that before."

Long odds too much for Yankees to overcome

NEW YORK -- The last gasp of the Yankees' playoff push came with Lyle Overbay working an eighth-inning walk on Wednesday. The crowd cheered as a run was forced home, but the out-of-town scoreboard signaled that the end of the road had been reached.

The outcome of their 8-3 loss to the Rays turned out to be meaningless, because the Indians finished their victory over the White Sox at Progressive Field, confirming that the Yankees will not participate in postseason play for just the second time in the last 19 years.

"It's a really sad feeling," second baseman Robinson Cano said. "Now you go home, and it's something that's going to be on my mind, in my head and my heart, maybe until next season."

New York will close out its home schedule on Thursday, with all-time saves leader Mariano Rivera expected to make his final Yankee Stadium appearance in game No. 159, a 7:05 p.m. ET contest against Tampa Bay.

Rivera wants to take the mound one last time at home "to say goodbye to the fans," but he is having a hard time coming to grips with the reality that his farewell season will not include a trip to the playoffs.

"I'm not used to pitching for something that doesn't mean anything," Rivera said. "I wanted to pitch for something that means something. The fans, to me, are special. They are special. I'll be there. I'll be there tomorrow, hopefully, God willing, and there for the fans. They deserve it."

The Yankees wrap up the season with a three-game series against the Astros in Houston, where Andy Pettitte will make his final career start on Friday.

The Yankees missed the playoffs in 2008, their first year under manager Joe Girardi, but this does feel like unfamiliar territory. They were mathematically in the chase on Sept. 21 of that year, the finale at the old Yankee Stadium, so Thursday will mark the first meaningless game played in the Bronx since 1993.

"We didn't get to where we wanted to get," Girardi said. "It should fuel you for next year. And the way you play out these next four games says a lot about who you are as a person, to me, and what you think about this game."

Though the Yankees saw 20 players spend time on the disabled list this year, it still seemed they might be able to overcome long odds and play October baseball, and the patchwork Bombers held a share of first place in the American League East as late as May 26.

They had to lean on their pitching to support a lineup that did not boast much muscle, but after they added Alfonso Soriano in a July trade, they finally seemed to have both the arms and the bats. Then, late in the year, the pitching slipped.

Even as late as Sept. 13, Girardi believed the Yankees' chances were good, buoyed by the fact that they posted three wins in four games against the Orioles in Baltimore. But that road trip quickly went sour, as they were swept by the Red Sox and lost two of three to the last-place Blue Jays.

"It's a different story if we had all our guys," Cano said. "At the same time, you don't have to look for excuses, because it was close."

Though the standings said they had a small chance, the Yankees appeared to have accepted their fate even before Wednesday's game. Cardboard boxes were littered in front of lockers, and the hiss of packing tape dispensers echoed through the room.

"It's extremely disappointing," Girardi said. "Back to the drawing board."

Foes aside, Yankees know they must win

NEW YORK -- Last week, in the cramped visiting manager's office at Fenway Park, Joe Girardi backed ever so slightly off his initial estimates. Perhaps, he thought aloud, 89 victories might be the bare minimum for the Yankees to qualify for postseason play.

That number is now impossible for them to reach, as the Yankees entered play on Tuesday with an 82-74 record and six games remaining on their schedule, but the club is still mathematically alive in the chase for the second American League Wild Card spot.

New York trailed the Indians by four games entering play on Tuesday, with the Rangers one game back and the Royals three out.

"The feeling is, you have to go out and win, then you hope you get some help from some other teams," Girardi said on Tuesday. "But I don't think the thought has changed what we have to do. If we don't win, then we have no shot. So the feeling is you have to go out and win."

The Yankees have missed qualifying for postseason play just once in the last 18 years. That also came under Girardi, in 2008, when his club was 89-73 in the final season at the old Yankee Stadium.

"I think our guys know that we have to basically win out," Girardi said. "I think they understand that. As long as you're still alive, you still have hope. Guys understand that, and I think they'll be prepared to play."

Determined CC vows to return to form in '14

NEW YORK -- With the final chapter of his inconsistent season in the books, CC Sabathia expressed confidence that he will return to form as the reliable head of the Yankees' rotation in 2014.

"I think I'll be back to myself," Sabathia said on Tuesday. "I know a lot of people have written me off and said I've thrown too many innings and whatever, but I'll still be here and still be accountable. I'll still be the guy that signed up in 2009."

Sabathia sustained a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring against the Giants on Friday, an injury that requires eight weeks for recovery and effectively ends his campaign.

Sabathia said that he felt his leg tighten around the second inning, but he was still able to complete seven innings of one-run ball. The start was one of Sabathia's strongest in an underwhelming year that saw him go 14-13 with a career-high 4.78 ERA in 32 starts.

"Pitching against San Francisco the other night, I felt like back to myself -- more so than any other start," Sabathia said. "It wasn't velocity -- I was 90-93 [mph] -- but just pitching inside, being aggressive, throwing fastballs in hitters' counts.

"Just going out there and being a bully. That's something I feel like I was before, and I kind of lost that this year."

Sabathia said that he gave back too many leads over the course of the season. He and pitching coach Larry Rothschild have also discussed increasing the amount of video Sabathia watches to prepare for his outings, something that Sabathia said he has not done much of over the course of his career.

"I don't think it was the year that CC probably expected he would have," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He's been so good for us. He still managed to have 14 wins, he still managed to give us over 200 innings; at times, the way we talked about CC, you wouldn't have thought that those two things are possible, that his struggles would have kept him from doing that. It was a battle for him all year long."

With the Yankees on the verge of being mathematically eliminated from postseason play, Sabathia took responsibility for not having the kind of season that would have increased their place in the standings.

"I feel like I could have gave Hiro [Kuroda] some help," Sabathia said. "We would be in the position we want to be in. It's tough in that sense, and even not being able to come down the stretch and pitch against these guys when we really need it."

Bombers bits

• The Yankees have set their rotation for the remainder of the home schedule, as Phil Hughes will pitch on Wednesday and Ivan Nova will pitch on Thursday against the Rays. Andy Pettitte will make the final start of his Major League career on Friday at Houston. The starters for the final two games of the season are to be announced.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:  Upon successful registration, follow the instructions provided to receive one (1) virtual bingo card (the "Bingo Card") for each game of the 2012 MLB Postseason played during the Promotion Period (each, a "Postseason Game"). In addition, during the Promotion Period, participants may utilize sharing functionality available via the Promotion upon completion of a successful Contest (the "Sharing Functionality") to receive two (2) additional Bingo Cards. For each eligible individual any entrant notifies or makes aware of the Promotion who clicks on a valid link made available via the Sharing Functionality identifiable as having come from the entrant, such entrant shall receive two (2) additional Bingo Cards (for a total of three (3) Bingo Cards). No additional Bingo Cards will be received other than through verified Sharing Functionality. There is a limit of three (3) Bingo Cards per person and per e-mail address per Postseason Game. Each Bingo Card shall include a 5x5 grid that includes twenty-five (25) tiles (each, a "Tile"). Each Tile will include one (1) randomly selected game outcome for the active Postseason Game. For example, a participant could have a "Josh Hamilton Double" Tile on their Bingo Card which would be automatically marked in the event Josh Hamilton hits a double during a Postseason Game. Any eligible participant who receives a Bingo Card that becomes marked with five (5) Tiles in a vertical, horizontal or diagonal row (each, a "Potential Winning Bingo Card") may be a potential Prize winner, subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with the terms of these Official Rules. PRIZE CLAIMS: In the event you receive a message within MLB.com Gameday notifying you that you have a Potential Winning Bingo Card, you must claim your Potential Winning Bingo Card by following the onscreen instructions provided by no later than ten (10) minutes following the end of the applicable Postseason Game to be eligible for the Drawing (defined below). Failure to claim your Potential Winning Bingo Card within ten (10) minutes following the end of the applicable Postseason Game will render the Potential Winning Bingo Card void and result in Prize forfeiture.

ALL POTENTIAL WINNING BINGO CARDS ARE SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION BY SPONSOR WHOSE DECISIONS ARE FINAL AND BINDING.
