TAMPA, Fla. -- Vidal Nuno turned in another impressive spring start as the Yankees defeated the Red Sox, 4-0, on Wednesday at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
A signee from independent ball who pitched last year at Class A Tampa and Double-A Trenton, Nuno held Boston to two hits over five scoreless innings, walking one and striking out one.
Nuno, 25, was originally property of the Indians, but the left-hander was discovered by New York while he was pitching for the independent Washington Wild. Nuno has expanded what was once a limited two-pitch repertoire to include a fastball, curveball, slider, changeup and cutter.
"When I first got drafted during high school, I only had two pitches," Nuno said. "Now I have five. It's just a smarter pitcher. I don't think or overthrow, and I hit my spots. That's one key I preach to myself, just hit location and make the ball dance, and you'll get people out."
New York scored four second-inning runs against Boston left-hander Felix Doubront, as Chris Stewart and Thomas Neal stroked run-scoring singles. Jayson Nix had a sacrifice fly and Doubront threw a wild pitch, allowing another run to score.
Doubront scattered seven hits over 4 1/3 innings in the outing, walking one and striking out five. The Red Sox got scoreless relief from Andrew Bailey, Joel Hanrahan, Clayton Mortensen and Andrew Miller.
Bullpen locks David Robertson and Joba Chamberlain were among those pitching scoreless innings in the contest for New York.
Up next: The Yankees are under the lights on Thursday, entertaining the Twins in a 7:05 p.m. ET contest at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The game will air live on MLB.TV. Second baseman Robinson Cano is expected to be in New York's lineup after returning from his service with the Dominican Republic's World Baseball Classic team. Right-hander David Phelps looks to continue his strong bid for a rotation slot, making his sixth start of the spring and scheduled to be opposed by Minnesota right-hander Liam Hendricks.
