After being DFA'd, Soriano released by Yanks

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Yankees have released outfielder Alfonso Soriano, who was designated for assignment on July 6, completing the organization's brief reunion with the free-swinging slugger.

Soriano, 38, batted .221 with six home runs and 23 RBIs in 67 games for New York this season. He is now free to sign with any organization, and the Yankees would be responsible for the remaining $5 million on his salary for the 2014 season, minus the pro-rated league minimum.

He was one of the hottest hitters in baseball after the Yankees acquired Soriano last July from the Cubs, slugging 17 home runs in 58 games, but struggled against right-handed pitching this year and had been losing playing time to Ichiro Suzuki.

A seven-time All-Star and four-time Silver Slugger Award winner, Soriano started his career with the Yankees from 1999-2003 before being traded to the Rangers in a deal that brought Alex Rodriguez to New York.

After being designated for assignment, Soriano told ESPNDeportes.com that the move "was to be expected" and that he believed the Yankees made a good decision in cutting him loose.

"I'm glad that now that I have been released I will have the opportunity to decide what I want to do next, and the team can go ahead and find someone to do the job I was unable to do," Soriano told the website.

In an additional roster move Monday, the Yankees optioned right-hander Bryan Mitchell to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Mitchell had been recalled to provide bullpen depth for Sunday's game against the Orioles in Baltimore.
