MINNEAPOLIS -- A challenge initiated by Twins manager Ron Gardenhire overturned a sensational catch by Yankees third baseman Zelous Wheeler near the Yankees dugout at Target Field on Friday.
The play happened when Sam Fuld popped up a foul ball near the third-base dugout with nobody out in the ninth inning and the Yankees clinging to a one-run lead with closer David Robertson on the mound. Wheeler ran over to make a great catch but stepped down the dugout steps to make the grab, so Gardenhire issued a challenge.
After a short video review, it was ruled Wheeler left the field of play to make the catch, and the call was overturned. On the next pitch, Fuld struck out for the first out of the inning in Minnesota's eventual 6-5 loss.
"It's a boundary play, so it's reviewable," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He can't go in the dugout to catch it. It was an outstanding play. Great awareness of where he's at. It's an outstanding effort."
It marked the 10th time Gardenhire has successfully challenged a play and had it overturned in 20 tries.
