MINNEAPOLIS -- Thirty minutes after he contributed four extra-base hits in a 6-5 Yankees win, Brian Roberts was nowhere to be found.

Center fielder Brett Gardner looked up and noticed a gaggle of reporters waiting patiently next to Roberts' stall.

"You guys waiting for B-Rob?" he asked.

Upon confirmation, Gardner stormed around the corner to the training room.

"Hey, B-Rob!" he shouted. "There's like 40 media people waiting for you out here!"

A minute later, Roberts sauntered out. The second baseman had just completed a Fourth of July to remember -- he became only the seventh player in Major League Baseball this season, and the first Yankee since Alex Rodriguez in 2005, to collect four extra-base knocks in a contest.

"Any time you can feel like you're contributing is always good," Roberts said. "Whether it's one hit or four hits. It was a fun game to be a part of."

The 36-year-old veteran was hitting .237 and had only collected 18 extra-base hits coming into Friday's game, but he got started early with a double in his first at-bat. He followed that with a ground-rule double in the second, a triple in the fourth, and then another double in the seventh before lining out in his final at-bat.

"We've said all along that his numbers are not really indicative of how he swung the bat," manager Joe Girardi said. "We think he's hit the ball pretty hard. He just didn't hit 'em at people."

To break out of his hitting funk, Roberts began wearing his pants high during the Rays series earlier this week. He believed it gave him good mojo for Friday's game, but wants to switch up the style again.

"I think I'll go down tomorrow and see what happens," Roberts said.

Roberts is the first Yankee to get four extra-base hits since Rodriguez against the Devil Rays on April 8, 2005. He's also the first player to hit three doubles and one triple in a four-extra-base-hit game since Tampa Bay's Ben Zobrist against Baltimore on June 11, 2011.

Roberts joins Charlie Blackmon, Corey Dickerson, Paul Goldschmidt, Brock Holt, Kyle Seager and Lonnie Chisenhall as members of this season's four-extra-base-hit club.
