BALTIMORE -- In his first public comments since being placed on the disabled list with a right elbow injury, Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka issued a statement on Friday apologizing for his current situation.

"As recently announced from the team, I will be going through some treatment and rehab on my injured elbow over the next several weeks," Tanaka said. "I give everything I have every time I take the ball. With that, I also know that there will always be a risk of injury when playing this game that I love.

"Right now I feel that the most important thing for me is to keep my head up, remain focused on the task at hand and devote all my energy into healing the injury in order to come back strong."

Tanaka, 25, was diagnosed with a small tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. Three different physicians recommended that Tanaka have a platelet-rich plasma injection and attempt to rehab the injury.

If all goes well, Tanaka could be back on a Major League mound in six weeks, though season-ending Tommy John surgery remains a possibility.

"I want to apologize to the Yankees organization, my teammates and our fans for not being able to help during this time," Tanaka said. "I accept this injury as a challenge, but I promise to do everything I can to overcome this setback and return to the mound as soon as possible."

Tanaka was off to a sensational start in his rookie season, posting a 12-4 record and a 2.51 ERA in his first 18 starts to earn selection as an American League All-Star. The Yankees have not said if Tanaka still plans to attend the July 15 All-Star Game at Target Field in Minneapolis.

CC having knee checked by Dodgers, Rangers docs

BALTIMORE -- Seeking additional opinions on his injured right knee, Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia canceled his appointment with Dr. James Andrews and set up visits with two other orthopedic specialists, the team announced on Friday.

Sabathia had been scheduled to see Andrews on Monday. Instead, he has lined up an appointment with Dodgers team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache, and has already been seen by Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister.

The Yankees have not released any details on the visits, but they remain unsure if Sabathia will be able to return this season; manager Joe Girardi has said that it is "fair to say" that Sabathia's year is over. It has been suggested that Sabathia may need microfracture surgery in his right knee, which has been said to have significant cartilage damage.

Sabathia was 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA in eight starts this season, and was placed on the disabled list following a May 10 outing in Milwaukee. He had been aiming to return to the rotation shortly after the All-Star break, but again experienced swelling and inflammation after a Minor League rehab start earlier this month.

Bombers bits

• Derek Jeter is scheduled to play in all three games against the Orioles at Camden Yards this weekend, manager Joe Girardi said.

• On this date in 1939, Yankee Stadium played host to its first All-Star Game. The American League won, 3-1, as Joe DiMaggio homered.

• Jeter went 2-for-4 in Thursday's 9-3 loss to the Indians, registering the 1,000th multihit game of his career. Jeter is the sixth player in Major League history to do so, joining Ty Cobb (1,293), Pete Rose (1,225), Tris Speaker (1,059), Stan Musial (1,059) and Hank Aaron (1,046).
