Dropping A-Rod in order an option for Girardi

No matter what, Alex Rodriguez probably won't be in the eight-hole. But Yankees manager Joe Girardi seemed more open to the possibility on Tuesday that A-Rod could be dropped in the batting order.

After the Yanks' 3-2 loss to the Orioles in Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Monday, Girardi said he had no intent of removing the struggling third baseman from his usual No. 3 spot. Rodriguez is 1-for-9 with five strikeouts through the first two ALDS games, and his power all but disappeared at the close of the regular season.

The ALDS is tied at 1 game apiece, making it a de facto best-of-three with little margin for error, or struggling stars. Game 3 is slated for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET on TBS.

"I think that we're going to do whatever it takes to win this three-game series," Girardi said when asked specifically about moving A-Rod. "Nothing that we do will be something that is just a knee-jerk reaction. You know, we talk about different things, and whether it's a pitching change or pitching situations. We know, the great thing about this is I have a great group of guys that's very unselfish, and they really want to win. And that's what we're going to do, what we think is best to win."

Girardi said any lineup change he'd make, with no specific reference to Rodriguez, takes emotional impact into the equation. But he indicated that in these settings, feelings aren't his top priority.

"I think you have to take it all into account," Girardi said. "We know that we're in a three-game series, and whether you need to pinch-hit for someone, you need to make a pitching change, you need to change the lineup a little bit, our guys understand. We have a veteran group that understands that we're going to do what we think is the best thing to win. So I mean, yeah, of course you have to take in a lot of factors. Sometimes it's just not as easy as just writing a name or taking a guy out, a pitcher out. You have to think about the emotional part. You always have to think about that as a manager.

"But being a three-game series, our guys know what's at stake, and we have to win two games."
