TAMPA, Fla. -- The Yankees are watching Michael Pineda's workouts as the hurler attempts to join the big league rotation this year, but they're also keeping a close eye on left-hander Cesar Cabral.
Cabral and Pineda both threw 25-pitch bullpen sessions on Friday at George M. Steinbrenner Field, and the Yankees are hopeful that Cabral could make an impact for them in the near future.
"It won't be this spring, but he's progressing well," manager Joe Girardi said. "He's a guy that we like the upside in him, we like his arm, but he won't quite be ready."
Cabral, 24, appeared to be on the verge of making the Yankees' roster last spring before suffering a fractured elbow near the end of camp, which effectively clinched Clay Rapada's spot on the team.
A Rule 5 Draft selection from the Red Sox in 2011 by way of the Royals, Cabral compiled a 3.61 ERA in 132 Minor League appearances from 2006-11, all in Boston's chain. Girardi said that it is possible Cabral could be pitching in Minor League games around May.
"When you look at a reliever compared to a starter, they don't need as much time because they're not going to be built up," Girardi said.
Posada to serve as guest instructor this spring
TAMPA, Fla. -- Jorge Posada is listed among the guest instructors expected in Yankees camp this spring, but manager Joe Girardi said he doesn't know when to expect the five-time World Series winner.
"I'm not sure exactly when he's coming," Girardi said. "Our guest instructors kind of make their own schedules. A lot of guys usually like to wait until the games start."
Several of the Yanks' instructors have already arrived, including Goose Gossage, Ron Guidry and David Wells. Posada was at George M. Steinbrenner Field last month to coach in the team's Women's Fantasy Camp and spoiled the surprise of his invitation.
"I'll be bossing them around -- telling them to run and all that stuff," Posada said then. "I miss certain things about the game. You're always going to miss certain things. I, obviously, miss my teammates the most."
Girardi said that he has also recently spoken to Hall of Famer Yogi Berra, who is not expected in camp this year. The 87-year-old Berra has found traveling to be increasingly difficult.
"We're all disappointed that he's not here; he's a fixture here and we miss him," Girardi said. "I look forward to seeing him when we get back."
Bombers bits
• Ace CC Sabathia is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session of the spring on Saturday morning. The left-hander is coming off arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone spur from his pitching elbow.
• The Yankees are keeping tabs on free-agent right-hander Chien-Ming Wang. The New York Post reported that Wang recently threw a bullpen session at the home of spring pitching instructor Billy Connors.
Wang, 32, was 2-3 with a 6.68 ERA in 10 games for the Nationals last season. He won 19 games for New York in back-to-back seasons in 2006 and '07.
• Alex Rodriguez is scheduled to arrive in New York on Friday to continue his rehab from Jan. 16 left hip surgery. Rodriguez is not expected to join the Yankees in Florida at any point this spring, according to general manager Brian Cashman.
