NEW YORK -- The Yankees have set their pitching rotation coming out of the All-Star break, lining up Andy Pettitte, Hiroki Kuroda and CC Sabathia to take the mound for a three-game series at Fenway Park against the Red Sox.
That series, New York's first trip of the year to Boston, begins on Friday.
Girardi said his thought process considered "just when their last start was, trying to keep guys with days off in a sense. Making sure CC got a couple extra, Kuroda got a couple extra, Andy got a couple extra."
A-Rod slated to rehab with Trenton on Monday
NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez's tumultuous Minor League rehabilitation assignment will reach the Double-A level on Monday, as he will be promoted to join the Trenton Thunder for their 7:05 p.m. ET game in Reading, Pa.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has confirmed the club's plans for Rodriguez, who is scheduled to leave Florida after playing in one final game for Class A Tampa on Sunday at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Rodriguez's promotion comes after news that the slugger did not show up to the team's facilities for a game on Friday following a meeting in the Tampa area with Major League Baseball officials investigating the distribution of performance-enhancing drugs.
As reported by the New York Post, the Yankees also asked Rodriguez to join Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for their series in Buffalo, hoping to have him avoid a poor weather forecast in Florida.
Rodriguez declined, telling the Yankees that he was too worn down to go, according to the AP. Friday's game in Tampa was rained out; Rodriguez played for Tampa on Saturday, going 0-for-3.
Rodriguez told reporters on Saturday that the situation was "news to me."
''It was rained out,'' Rodriguez said, according to the AP. ''Whatever conversations I have with my coaches and my trainers, I will keep that private. More importantly, today we played a full game.''
Entering play on Sunday, Rodriguez was 2-for-18 with one RBI and five strikeouts in seven games during his rehab assignment with Class A Charleston and Tampa.
''I thought today was probably the happiest I've been with the way my body reacted,'' Rodriguez said after Saturday's game. ''I thought the way I swung the bat, it felt like I had more power behind my swings. Those are the types of things I'm looking for.''
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that the reports he has received on Rodriguez's progress "have been OK." Rodriguez's 20-day Minor League rehab stint would end on July 22, when the Yankees are scheduled to open a four-game series with the Rangers in Arlington.
"Physically, he's doing OK," Girardi said. "We'll just keep rehabbing and trying to lengthen him out, play him a couple of days in a row and see what we have after the 20 days."
Girardi: Yanks will evaluate Jeter after All-Star Game
NEW YORK -- The Yankees may not know if Derek Jeter's strained right quadriceps is playable until after the All-Star Game, manager Joe Girardi said.
"We're really not going to evaluate him probably until Thursday or Friday," Girardi said.
Jeter suffered a Grade 1 strain of the quad running out a ground ball on Thursday against the Royals, playing his first game of the season after returning from two fractures in his surgically repaired left ankle.
Jeter was not present at Yankee Stadium on Saturday due to a stomach virus, but he was expected to be on the bench for Sunday's game against the Twins.
Additionally, Girardi said that he held Brett Gardner out of Sunday's lineup to rest his "overall body [soreness], head to toe."
"He's played every day for us," Girardi said. "He's a little bit beat up, but he's available to me. If I can buy him an extra day, I'll buy him an extra day."
Bombers bits
• Right-hander David Phelps (right forearm strain) and infielder Jayson Nix (right hamstring strain), both of whom are on the 15-day disabled list, are scheduled to travel to Tampa, Fla. for rehab on Monday. Phelps is expected to begin throwing on Monday and is hopeful of rejoining the team when eligible during the upcoming series in Boston.
• On this date in 1957, the Yankees rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the ninth inning of Game 2 of a doubleheader at Chicago to win, 6-4, thanks in part to Moose Skowron's pinch-hit grand slam and Tommy Byrne's solo home run.
• Infielder Travis Ishikawa has elected free agency in lieu of accepting an outright assignment to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Ishikawa played in just one game for the Yankees, going 0-for-2.
