CHICAGO -- Alfonso Soriano returned to Chicago on Monday for the first time since being traded by the Cubs to the Yankees, to open a three-game series with the White Sox.
"I love this city," Soriano said. "It's not a surprise for anybody. [But] now with the new [Yankees uniform], I'm happy."
Soriano said he spoke with some of his former Cubs teammates when he got to town.
"On my way to the ballpark, I just spoke to [Cubs catcher Welington] Castillo -- they had a day off in Philadelphia -- and I just talked a little bit with him. They're OK."
He said he knows his former teammates miss him, but he's happy to be in Yankees pinstripes.
"It's part of the game," Soriano said. "You know, sometimes you've got to move, do the best for me and for my family. I tried to do the best for the team in Chicago and the city, but it [didn't] work, so now I'm with a new team."
Calf strain forces Jeter back to disabled list
CHICAGO -- The Yankees announced before Monday's game against the White Sox that shortstop Derek Jeter has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. The move came two days after an MRI revealed a Grade 1 strain of his right calf.
"It's probably a better idea to put him on the DL than to test it in nine days, 10 days, 11 days, and then have a setback," manager Joe Girardi said.
The 39-year-old Jeter has had multiple setbacks, resulting in him playing in only five games this season.
He made his season debut July 11 after a pair of fractures in his ankle suffered in last year's American League Championship Series forced him to miss the first half of the season. He injured his quadriceps in his season debut, sending him back to the DL.
"It's been terrible. It's been like a nightmare," Jeter said Sunday of facing yet another injury. "The whole season has been a nightmare."
The Yankees made two other moves Monday in addition to activating third baseman Alex Rodriguez, recalling infielder David Adams from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and designating infielder Brent Lillibridge for assignment.
In 38 games with the Yankees, Adams hit .198 (25-for-126) with two home runs and 11 RBIs.
"[Adams] has been playing more first and third and we'll use him there," Girardi said.
Worth noting
• Vernon Wells started at first base for the first time in his career Monday against the White Sox.
"We've worked him out there, 10, 12 times over the course of this year and we're trying to get his bat in the lineup," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We're using all of our left-handers, because left-handers have had success, our outfielders. It's a day [off] that I can give Lyle [Overbay] and we're going to see three lefties [in the White Sox series], and it's something I think Vernon can do."
• Curtis Granderson, who grew up in Lynwood, Ill., hosted a pregame meet-and-greet for 36 Little Leaguers from Lynwood and nearby Lansing -- where he played Little League -- at U.S. Cellular Field. On Thursday, Granderson will team up with Grand Kids Foundation to host the inaugural Grand Kids Little League All Star Game at the Lansing Sports Complex.
Granderson said he wants to teach the youngsters "hard work, leadership, failure, picking yourself right back up, goal-setting, teamwork, hand-eye coordination, physical fitness, being outside and being active, all those different things, and just to run around and have fun."
