BALTIMORE -- Alex Rodriguez said that he did not expect to have any difficulty serving as the Yankees' DH on Wednesday, one night after he tweaked his left hamstring scoring from second base on a single.
Rodriguez said that he felt a "knot" in the lower portion of his hamstring as he ran home on Robinson Cano's eighth-inning single in New York's 7-5 win, but received treatment and felt "ready to go."
"I am just playing as hard as I can and trying to help the team to win," said Rodriguez, who entered play on Wednesday batting .301 with five homers and 12 RBIs in 31 games.
Rodriguez said that he should have no problem running the bases, even if he needs to slide. The 38-year-old acknowledged that he has lost at least a step on the basepaths following two hip surgeries.
"When you run as slow as I do, sliding is not a big deal," Rodriguez said. "That's not in slow motion, that's real speed."
Ryan: Joining Yankees, playoff race 'thrilling'
BALTIMORE -- Brendan Ryan said he was sitting at his Safeco Field locker about 15 minutes before game time, scouring the waiver wire of his fantasy football league, when he was summoned to the office of Mariners manager Eric Wedge.
Ryan had no way of knowing, but while he was pondering moves for running backs or wide receivers, the Yankees were making a real-life trade for a shortstop. Ryan boarded a red-eye flight from Seattle, joining his new team for Wednesday's game at Camden Yards.
"I'm here. I'm excited," Ryan said. "I'm trying to process all this, and I'm playing [Wednesday]. This has been a pretty exciting 24 hours. I'm just focused on doing whatever I can to help this team."
With the Yankees needing reinforcement at shortstop because of Derek Jeter's health situation, Ryan was acquired from Seattle late on Tuesday in exchange for a player to be named.
"I don't know if it's the most enviable position, to step in after a legend," Ryan said.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he plans on splitting the time between Ryan and Eduardo Nunez at shortstop for the remainder of the season. If the Yankees make the playoffs, Ryan would not be eligible for the roster because he was not part of the organization on Aug. 31.
Generally regarded as a top-notch defensive infielder, Ryan was batting .192 (50-for-260) with three home runs and 21 RBIs. He said that he thanked Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik for giving him the chance to play meaningful September games.
"I just went from a whole bunch of games back to right in the race," Ryan said. "It's pretty thrilling."
Romine suffers slight concussion, will rest
BALTIMORE -- Yankees catcher Austin Romine suffered a slight concussion when he was hit by a foul tip on Tuesday, manager Joe Girardi said.
Romine left Camden Yards for tests during New York's 7-5 victory over the Orioles. He was struck in the mask by a ball off Adam Jones' bat during the seventh inning and was removed from the game.
"He's not going to be on the field today for pregame," Girardi said. "I will not use him [Wednesday]. We'll see where he's at in a couple of days."
Romine is batting .296 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 60 games this season for New York. The Yankees also have catchers Chris Stewart and J.R. Murphy on the active roster.
Bombers bits
• Despite tightness in his right triceps, Ivan Nova is expected to make his next start, according to Girardi. Nova threw 79 pitches over six innings on Tuesday, taking a no-decision.
• Both David Huff and Phil Hughes were listed as available relievers for the Yankees on Wednesday. Huff continues to be listed as the Yanks' probable starter for Thursday's series finale against the Orioles, and Girardi said a decision was expected late Wednesday night depending on how the game progresses.
• On this date in 2009, Jeter broke Lou Gehrig's franchise record of 2,721 hits with a single off the Orioles' Chris Tillman at Yankee Stadium. Gehrig had held the mark since 1937.
