BOSTON -- Brett Gardner would love to be back on the field before the regular season ends, but the outfielder understands that his strained left oblique may not heal in time for that to happen.

Gardner suffered the injury on a checked swing in Baltimore on Thursday. He said that the discomfort will not permit him to do any baseball activities at this time, including running.

"We're running out of time, and the only way I can come back is if I'm at 100 percent," Gardner said. "Hopefully I get there, but we'll see. It all depends on how quickly I heal and how well I take care of it."

Gardner said that it would be at least a week before he could begin moving around, a timetable that manager Joe Girardi agreed with.

"I think you've got to give him a week to see where he's at," Girardi said. "I think he'll be a pinch-runner maybe before he can do anything else. He's a ways from picking up a bat."

Without Gardner, who batted .273 with eight homers, 52 RBIs and 24 stolen bases in 145 games, the Yankees have handed center-field duties back to Curtis Granderson.

"It's frustrating, but the team's still in this, and I'm happy I'm here to be with them and cheer them on," Gardner said. "I hope we play well the last couple weeks of the season, whether I'm in there or not."

Soriano returns to lineup despite sprained thumb

BOSTON -- If this were not the middle of a heated September playoff chase, Alfonso Soriano said that he would probably take a few games off to allow his sprained right thumb to properly heal.

That is not a luxury that Soriano or the Yankees can afford right now, and so the slugger told manager Joe Girardi that he wanted to be in Sunday's lineup against the Red Sox. The thumb may not be perfect, but it's good enough.

"We're in the race and it's not time to take a day off," Soriano said. "I just want to do the best I can and help the team to win."

Soriano was batting cleanup for the Yankees as they try to avoid a three-game sweep by the Red Sox.

He bent his thumb backward making a diving catch on Thursday against the Orioles in Baltimore and then aggravated the injury by sliding headfirst while stealing second base on Friday against the Red Sox.

"For me not to play [Saturday], I had to feel very bad," Soriano said. "I did a lot of treatment yesterday and I'm feeling better today."

Dealing with sore calf, A-Rod hopes to play Tuesday

BOSTON -- The Yankees have a new injury to watch with Alex Rodriguez, who was forced to exit Sunday's 9-2 loss to the Red Sox with tightness in his right calf.

Rodriguez has been guarding a tight left hamstring since saying he felt a "knot" while running the bases Tuesday against the Orioles in Baltimore. He said that he felt the calf tightness during both of his at-bats on Sunday.

"I've had a calf injury before, and those are tricky," Rodriguez said. "They're very dangerous. I'm hoping that I came out of the game before something really bad happened."

Rodriguez was referring to a calf strain in 2010 that cost him 14 games. Rodriguez said that he will have treatment during Monday's off-day and hopes to play on Tuesday against the Blue Jays in Toronto.

The Yankees have used Rodriguez as a designated hitter for five games since that injury, and Rodriguez said he was trying not to have the hamstring "blow out."

"There's no time for concern, you've just got to go," Rodriguez said. "You've got to play as hard as you can, and you never know. We've just got to worry about being back on a good winning streak on Tuesday."

Rodriguez's speed on the basepaths has appeared limited, but manager Joe Girardi had been optimistic that Rodriguez could return to third base on Tuesday. That now appears to be strongly in question.

"I have no idea [if Rodriguez will play Tuesday]," Girardi said. "No idea."

Rodriguez batted twice against Boston's Clay Buchholz on Sunday, knocking a run-scoring groundout in the first inning and singling in the second inning before being erased on a double play.

Vernon Wells pinch-hit for Rodriguez when his spot in the lineup came around again in the fifth inning, remaining in the game as the DH.

"It's frustrating, especially because I feel so good up there," Rodriguez said. "I've also missed playing third base. I think it's important for me to be out there playing third base. I think it makes our team more balanced. I guess the good news is that we're leaving Boston."

Dr. Andrews to examine Logan's left elbow

BOSTON -- The Yankees have sent left-hander Boone Logan to see Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla., and there is a chance that the reliever's season is over.

Logan has not pitched since Sept. 6 due to discomfort in his left elbow. He has attempted to resume throwing but seems to be no closer to getting back on the mound.

"He actually played catch yesterday, and he played better catch," manager Joe Girardi said. "But just to reassure everything's OK, we sent him there."

At Logan's request, the Yankees sent his MRI results to be reviewed by Andrews last week.

General manager Brian Cashman also signed free agent left-hander Mike Zagurski in response to Logan's continued issues. Zagurski has yet to appear in a game, and Girardi has been using left-hander Cesar Cabral in spots that normally would have gone to Logan.

Bombers bits

• The Yankees' Sept. 21 game against the Giants, previously listed as to be announced, has been scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET. It will be televised by FOX.

• On this date in 1926, Bob Meusel tied a Major League record with three sacrifice flies in the Yankees' 6-4 win over the Indians at League Park.
