NEW YORK -- Francisco Cervelli's career with the Yankees has taken another unfortunate twist. The catcher sustained a Grade 2 strain of his right hamstring during New York's 3-2 victory over the Red Sox on Sunday and is headed to the 15-day disabled list.

Manager Joe Girardi said that Cervelli was sent for an MRI examination after he limped off the field. The injury occurred when he legged out a fourth-inning grounder that was determined to be a run-scoring fielder's choice after an umpires' video review.

"It's good hustle by Cervy; unfortunately, I believe we've lost him for a little bit," Girardi said. "As we know, divisions and Wild Card spots come down to one game. That was an important run."

The Yankees also had a late scare to catcher Brian McCann, who was nicked in the right index finger by a ball that hit Red Sox batter A.J. Pierzynski in the eighth inning.

McCann stretched out his finger on the grass near home plate, attended to by Girardi and assistant athletic trainer Mark Littlefield, and was able to stay in the game. Good thing for the Yanks, as they were out of catchers after Cervelli's departure. Infielder Dean Anna would have been next in line as an emergency catcher.

McCann said that he would have a precautionary X-ray before leaving Yankee Stadium; that test came back negative, the Yankees said.

"It went numb. In a spot like that, I need to get the feeling back in my hand before we play again, just in case there was a play I needed to make," McCann said. "It's fine."

Cervelli began last season sharing duties with Chris Stewart as the Yanks' starting-catcher tandem, but he made just 16 starts behind the plate before fracturing his right hand on a foul tip. Cervelli also served a 50-game drug suspension in August.

Catcher Austin Romine is the most likely candidate to be recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Cervelli on the active roster. The Yankees also optioned right-hander Shane Greene to Triple-A after Sunday's game.
