NEW YORK -- Francisco Cervelli says he is ready to contribute to the Yankees in any way possible. He likes to catch, where he has spent most of his career, but spent time taking balls at first and third base while rehabbing his strained right hamstring in the Minors.

"I want to help the team the most I can. I don't care if I have to play right field. ... If I have to pitch, I pitch," Cervelli said with a laugh.

The Yankees activated Cervelli off the 60-day disabled list Tuesday. He was injured April 13, when he strained his hamstring against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. He played in 10 Minor League games during his rehab stint.

Cervelli battled with injury issues last season also. He was limited to just 16 starts before fracturing his right hand on a foul tip. Then he served a 50-game performance-enhancing-drug suspension in August.

This time around, Cervelli's father helped him through his rehab, not only physically, but also to make sure he was in the right place mentally.

"I tired to put my mind clear," Cervelli said. "Last year was real bad emotionally, and I don't want to feel that way again."

John Ryan Murphy was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make room for Cervelli. The Yankees did not want to carry three catchers, and they want Murphy to benefit from playing every day. But he had been an effective replacement -- in 24 games, he hit .286, with one home run and eight RBIs.

"Played extremely well," manager Joe Girardi said. "Obviously we were pleased with what he did, and he got his share of playing time, but I think it's important that he plays every day and continues his development."

CC gets on mound, takes next step in rehab

NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia threw off a mound Monday for the first time since May 10, when he pitched against the Brewers and was quickly shuttled to the 15-day disabled list.

Sabathia threw a bullpen session of just fastballs and changeups, the next step in his rehab from a right knee stem-cell injection. Yankees manager Joe Girardi still doesn't have a specific date for Sabathia's return.

"We don't really have a time frame yet," said Girardi. "He'll throw another bullpen [session Wednesday], and then we'll just continue to increase the amount of pitches and the pitches that he throws. I think he's going to mix in some other pitches [Wednesday], and mix in a slider as well."

Sabathia had hoped to be back on the club's active roster by the All-Star break, but Girardi may have a longer rehab in store for his lefty

"You kind of just go day by day, for me, with him," said Girardi. "If he gets through tomorrow, then he'll probably throw another bullpen [session], and we'll increase the number there. He gets through that, eventually he starts to see hitters, and then you get him in the game. So it's really just taking it one step at a time.

"I think it's fair that if everything's on track, it'll be similar [to a Spring Training regimen]," said Girardi.

That might mean close to seven more weeks.

"I've been throwing the whole time," said Sabathia. "I feel pretty good. Obviously you have to be cautious, not wanting to hurt my arm, but we'll see. ... Hopefully we can skip some steps."

As for Sabathia's knee, after throwing one session in the bullpen, it hasn't concerned him.

"It's no problem. Nothing to report," he said. "It's encouraging to move forward, especially for [Wednesday]."

"These guys are doing a great job," Sabathia said of the rotation's replacements like Chase Whitley. "Obviously [Masahiro] Tanaka is the best pitcher on the planet. Hopefully I can get back and just fill in my spot."

Bombers bits

• The Yankees entered play Tuesday 22-17 on the road but just 13-16 at Yankee Stadium.

‬‬‬ "We have not hit the ball out of the ballpark a whole lot. That probably has something to do with it," said Girardi.

Michael Pineda, still recovering from soreness behind his right shoulder, is supposed to throw Saturday. On Friday, Girardi mentioned that Pineda would likely not be back to the rotation until August.

‬‬‬ • With Shawn Kelley back in the Yankees' bullpen, reliever Adam Warren is a potential prospect to join a depleted starting rotation, but Girardi likes him in the bullpen for now.

‬ "Warren's been a vital part of our bullpen," said Girardi.‬‬ "He really stepped up when Shawn Kelley went down. He's a guy that can give you multiple innings down there, but as I said, we'll continue to evaluate our staff."
