Ellsbury exits vs. Mariners with right hip tightness

SEATTLE -- Jacoby Ellsbury was removed in the seventh inning of Thursday's 6-3 Yankees win over the Mariners with what the club announced to be right hip tightness, but the outfielder is expected to be available to play on Friday against the Athletics in Oakland.

Ellsbury said that his already-sore hip stiffened after he hit the wall in left-center field in the fifth inning, making a leaping catch to steal a deep drive away from Seattle's Robinson Cano.

The discomfort continued through Ellsbury's sixth-inning at-bat, a popout to shortstop, and Ellsbury was replaced defensively for the bottom of the seventh inning.

"It was tight," Ellsbury said. "I'll expect to be in there tomorrow, but I think it was the right decision. I got some ice on it, did everything we could, and I plan on being in there tomorrow."

Manager Joe Girardi said that no tests are planned for Ellsbury, who finished the night 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, a walk and two runs scored, extending his hitting streak to 16 games -- the longest active streak in the Majors.

Ellsbury has been dealing with tightness in the hip for about a week. He was scratched from the Yankees' lineup on Monday against the Royals because of the issue, but the game was rained out.

"Technically I didn't miss anything, because of the rainout," Ellsbury said. "But hitting the wall, I guess it could have happened on anything. I was running at pretty good speed."
