OAKLAND -- The Yankees have signed right-hander Heath Bell to a Minor League contract and plan to audition the veteran reliever at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Bell, 36, was 1-1 with a 7.27 ERA in 13 appearances for the Rays this season. He moved to the Orioles organization and opted out of his Minor League deal after posting a 4.22 ERA in 10 2/3 innings with Triple-A Norfolk.
"This guy has had success," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He's been a closer who has pitched in high-level situations. We'll see if he can help us."
A three-time All-Star, Bell has compiled a 3.49 ERA and a 38-32 record with 168 saves in 590 games with the Mets (2004-06), Padres (2007-11), Marlins (2012), D-backs (2013) and Rays (2014).
Cervelli likely to rejoin Yankees next week in NY
OAKLAND -- Francisco Cervelli was eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list on Friday, but the Yankees have decided to keep him on a Minor League rehabilitation assignment with Double-A Trenton until the team returns to New York.
"He won't join us this weekend, and then we'll make a determination after this weekend," manager Joe Girardi said. "He'll play the next few days with Trenton, and then we'll probably see him next week."
Cervelli strained his right hamstring beating out a ground ball in an April 13 game against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium, and he has played in seven Minor League games entering play on Friday.
Trenton is playing a three-game series this weekend in New Britain, Conn.
"We don't think the at-bats hurt him," Girardi said. "Brian McCann is going to play the next three days here, that's my plan. For him just to sit and not get the at-bats doesn't make a lot of sense, and we think the at-bats will help him."
When Cervelli is activated from the disabled list, John Ryan Murphy is expected to be optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre so he can play regularly.
Girardi: August return realistic for righty Pineda
OAKLAND -- Michael Pineda has not resumed throwing and will not rejoin the Yankees' rotation before August, manager Joe Girardi confirmed on Friday.
Pineda was scratched from a June 1 intrasquad outing when he felt soreness behind his right shoulder, and is essentially starting from zero because this is his second setback.
"I would think August is probably realistic," Girardi said. "You've got to build him up. That's the problem."
Pineda sustained the initial setback while throwing a simulated game in Tampa, Fla., in April, attempting to stay sharp while serving a 10-game suspension levied after he was ejected from a game at Fenway Park for having pine tar on his neck.
"It really is [disappointing]. I don't think we're going to have to limit his innings," Girardi said.
Yanks exceed slot to sign third-rounder DeCarr
OAKLAND -- The Yankees have signed right-hander Austin DeCarr, their third-round selection in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, MLB.com has confirmed.
DeCarr, the 91st-overall selection in the Draft, received a $1 million signing bonus. The recommended slot value for the pick was $585,100.
The 19-year-old was selected from Salisbury School (Conn.), where he pitched a post-graduate year after excelling at Xaverian (Mass.) High. The 6-foot-3, 218-pound hurler is expected to begin his professional career with the Gulf Coast Yankees.
"Austin is a special talent," said Salisbury head coach John Toffey. "The first thing I think you notice about him is his size and how well his arm works. His arm looks really easy, his fastball is 91 to 96 mph, and one of the things that really sets him apart is the curveball. He's got a classic 12-6 curveball, so you're looking at two plus pitches right there.
"I think he has the makings of a plus changeup. He obviously didn't need to use the changeup at our level a whole lot this year, because he was dominant the entire season. It's one of the best seasons I've ever had the privilege to coach."
Bombers bits
• Jacoby Ellsbury was in the Yankees' lineup as expected on Friday, one day after he was removed from New York's 6-3 win at Seattle with right hip tightness. Girardi said that Ellsbury "came in and said he feels good."
• Yangervis Solarte "just looks like he could use a day off," according to Girardi, so the rookie third baseman was out of Friday's lineup. Solarte entered Friday hitless in his last 12 at-bats; Kelly Johnson made the start at third base instead.
• The A's are expecting three consecutive sellouts this weekend at O.co Coliseum, including one for Sunday's pregame Derek Jeter tribute.
"Maybe that's why people are calling me asking for tickets, because you can't buy them," Girardi said.
• On this date in 1948, an ailing Babe Ruth made his final appearance at Yankee Stadium as the Yankees retired his No. 3.
