The Yankees' No. 2 jersey has been a fixture not only on the field for nearly two full decades, but also atop the lists of Major League Baseball's most popular jerseys at the MLB.com Shop.
Now that the days of seeing that jersey on the field are numbered, so are the opportunities going forward to order a Derek Jeter jersey. The MLB.com Shop will continue to stock the retiring star's jerseys as Majestic Athletic produces them, but you might want to act sooner than later, because the usual holiday-season demand for his jersey could mean sizes gradually go out of stock.
And when they're out, they're out. A year ago, there was a huge demand for Mariano Rivera's No. 42 jerseys right before and after his final game. Don't count on a lot of No. 2s being available in December, as you might have done in the past.
You've probably seen a barrage of Jeter commemorative items over the course of this season, an unprecedented way to celebrate a retiring baseball player through digital purchases. There are actually 590 items from which to choose right now. In addition to that wide variety of No. 2 jerseys, here are 10 more examples of how you can bid a gradual farewell to the Captain:
Final Season Hood. This MLB.com exclusive also is available in women's, and there's a cool back-to-school look for the kids.
Women's Premium Tri-Blend V-Neck Tee. Majestic made this exclusively for the MLB.com Shop, and Hannah Davis should have worn it for her ALS Ice Bucket Challenge video. There are several other MLB.com exclusives in the women's section of the Jeter collection.
Wear the cap. It's the same New Era Authentic 59FIFTY cap that Jeter is wearing in his final games, complete with his retirement patch over the left ear. There are many other models as well.
Newest Jeter Bobblehead. This springy bobble features replicas of the five World Series rings the shortstop earned for 1996, '98-2000 and '09.
Ball pitched to Jeter. The Brewers have listed an authenticated ball that Yovani Gallardo pitched to Jeter in the third inning of a game on May 9, and as of Thursday bidding was at $270 with a closing time of 10 p.m. ET on Sunday. It's from Jeter's final season, he fouled it off, and proceeds benefit the Brewers Community Foundation so it helps a good cause.
Fly the flag. Imagine hanging this 3-by-5-foot Jeter flag in front of your house during the waning days of Jeter's career, right next to Old Glory. Neighbors will approve.
Exclusive seat-and-ball package. It's all about No. 2, and the MLB.com Shop is featuring these two items for $999.99: an autographed Final Season baseball and a Yankee Stadium commemorative seat. Someone sat in this seat as Jeter gave "The Speech" after the final game at the old ballpark in 2008.
The 2 Coin. This steel coin from Highland Mint is just two bucks, and 100 percent of all proceeds from the sales of them are going to Jeter's Turn 2 Foundation.
Autographed Louisville Slugger All-Star Logo Bat. It's the commemorative model from the 85th Midsummer Classic played on July 15 at Target Field, a permanent reminder of how Jeter rocked the house in his final All-Star Game. This MLB.com Auction listing closes on Wednesday night, but you can Buy Now at a good price, $300 below normal retail.
Hand puppet. Only $9.99 and great to hold up if you're in the crowd on Sept. 7.
