Judge named Arizona Fall League Player of the Week

Judge's production for the Arizona Fall League's Scottsdale Scorpions has added fuel to the fire.

The 22-year-old was named the league's Player of the Week for Week No. 4. He had a two-homer game on Thursday and he led the league in runs scored (six) and on-base percentage (.857) and tied for the lead in homers (two) and walks (seven) over the last week. He was second in the league in total bases (12), slugging percentage (.857) and OPS (1.494) and third in home runs/at-bats ratio (1/13.50). He had only one strikeout in 14 at-bats.

Entering Tuesday, he was tied for second in home runs (four) and seventh in slugging percentage (.569), and he was hitting .310 in 16 games.

Judge, who is the Yankees' No. 5 prospect, has heard most of the comments about his size and what that means.

"Yeah, I get that a lot," he said with a sigh. "I try not to pay attention to that kind of stuff.

"My approach is that I just try to get a base hit from gap to gap. I figure that if you get 400-500 at-bats, you are probably going to run into 25 or 30 [home runs]. I am just trying to square the ball up and hit the ball hard. I'm sure that I will get my share."

Combine Judge's season with the one that Scottsdale teammate and first-base prospect Greg Bird is having, the Yankees' future would appear to be in good hands. Judge also played in the Future Stars Game. Bird picked up Player of the Week honors in week No. 2.

Judge came to the Fall League with a combined .308 average at Class A Charleston and Tampa in 2014, with 144 hits, 17 homers and 78 RBIs in 131 games, playing mostly in right field or as the DH. He usually hit No. 3 or No. 4 in the batting order.

Judge grew up near Stockton, Calif., and played college ball at Fresno State. He played center on occasion, but mainly right, and it is there where he feels the most comfortable.

"You have more of an opportunity to throw guys out," he said.

He has enjoyed his time in the Fall League thus far.

"Things have been going great. We're still playing ball in November. You can't ask for more than that," he said. "The first week, I didn't really know anybody. But it turned around pretty fast and now it's almost like family being with these guys. Particularly Greg Bird. He is a great guy and the way he has been hitting, it has been pretty awesome."

Bird probably would say the same thing about Judge.

It has been quite a journey thus far for Judge, playing ball as a youth on the West Coast and then being drafted by one of the most storied franchises in sports.

"It's amazing to be with the Yankees, an honor and a blessing," Judge said. "Because of who the Yankees are, people are bound to get more opportunities to see you play. You always see them on TV."
