Steinbrenner's foundation to aid family of slain officer

George Steinbrenner, the late Yankees owner, started the Silver Shield Foundation in the early 1980s to help the children of police and firefighters killed in the line of duty.

His foundation is going to pay for the education of the children of Rafael Ramos, the NYPD officer who was killed along with his partner, Wenjian Lui, while sitting in their squad car in Brooklyn on Saturday, according to a report by the New York Daily News.

Ramos has two sons, a 13-year-old named Jaden and another who is in college. Lui did not have any children, but he leaves behind a wife.

The foundation will set aside an education fund to assist with tuition payments for prep school, college and university undergraduate and graduate school, vocational and technical school and tutoring services.

Steinbrenner started the foundation in 1982 after attending a funeral of a police officer in New York slain in the line of duty. During the ceremony, an American flag was folded military-style and presented to the officer's surviving spouse and children, according to the foundation's website.

"George could not forget the image of the children," James E. Fuchs, the foundation's co-founder, wrote in statement on their website. "He was concerned about their education, and who would help with the cost."

The foundation is run by Fuchs' daughter, K.C., and continues to support children in the NYPD, FDNY, state police and Port Authority workers in the tri-state area.
