TAMPA, Fla. -- The all-time saves leader still loves to chase down those batting-practice fly balls in center field. Mariano Rivera looked right at home on Wednesday, slipping on his old No. 42 uniform and reporting to Yankees camp as a special guest instructor.
This is the second consecutive spring in the coaches' room for Rivera, who retired after of the 2013 season. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he expects Rivera to remain in camp for nine or 10 days.
"I joked with him, I said, 'The last time a guy like you came to Spring Training, he made two days of coaches' meetings, and then he went home for three days and decided he wanted to pitch again,'" Girardi said. "So I'm just curious to see how long [he is] going to make it in our meetings."

Girardi was referring to Andy Pettitte, of course, who visited camp in 2012 as a guest instructor and then un-retired to pitch two more seasons in the Majors. Pettitte is among the guest instructors scheduled to make it to Yankees camp later this spring.
Having a player of Rivera's stature in camp should be beneficial for the younger Yankees, Girardi said.
"He has free rein to help out as much as he can," Girardi said. "I think the advice that he'll give young players should be something they should listen to."
Eric Chavez, Billy Connors, Goose Gossage, Ron Guidry, Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez, Lee Mazzilli and Stump Merrill have also been seen in uniform as guest instructors. Reggie Jackson and Hideki Matsui are expected to visit when Grapefruit League games begin.
