"It feels good. Look, I'm happy that I can contribute," Rodriguez said. "It's early March. Let's see what happens. You have to do that in New York, where it counts. It's certainly a good start."

Red Sox first baseman Travis Shaw homered and doubled as Boston cranked out 18 hits. Shaw greeted Andrew Miller with a no-doubt line-drive homer over the right-field wall that opened the third inning, and he then banged a two-run double to deep left-center off Bryan Mitchell in the fourth.

"You don't want to face young kids early on in spring," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "They let it fly."

Boston right-hander Joe Kelly permitted two runs and three hits over three innings, making his second start of the spring. Ellsbury and Beltran notched run-scoring singles in the third inning off Kelly, who walked one and struck out four.

3/11/15: Chris Capuano leaves the game with a strained right quad after running to the first-base bag in the 1st

Chris Capuano started for New York, but he was forced to exit after two batters after sustaining a right quadriceps strain while covering first base on a Brock Holt groundout. Capuano is scheduled to have an MRI on Wednesday, and general manager Brian Cashman indicated that Capuano will be "out a while."

Envisioned as the Yanks' No. 5 starter, Capuano's injury opens the door for Mitchell, Esmil Rogers, Adam Warren and Chase Whitley to compete for that role. Mitchell was hit hard, permitting four runs and seven hits over two innings as the Red Sox batted around in the fourth. Garin Cecchini and Jeff Bianchi also had run-scoring hits off Mitchell.

"We'll look at everyone, that's the bottom line, because we need to fill a spot now," Girardi said.

Mookie Betts, who is bidding to be Boston's center fielder on Opening Day, went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot while Cecchini had two hits and three RBIs. Luke Montz crushed a two-run homer to left-center field in the eighth.

Slade Heathcott rounded out the Yankees' scoring by hitting a two-run homer to right field.

Up next: Masahiro Tanaka will make his spring debut on Thursday as the Yankees host the Braves in a 7:05 p.m. ET start at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Tanaka is expected to pitch two innings. The Braves will send Shelby Miller to the mound. The game will air live on MLB.TV.
