TAMPA, Fla. -- Didi Gregorius received treatment and reported some improvement in his strained left wrist on Sunday, one day after the Yankees' shortstop awkwardly rolled on his glove hand diving for a ground ball.
Gregorius said that he believes he will be ready for Opening Day. The Yankees' plan is to rest him for the next two days and then try to get him back in the lineup on Wednesday, when New York hosts the Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
"It's loose, working, so I'm feeling good," Gregorius said.
General manager Brian Cashman clarified that Gregorius had both an X-ray and an MRI exam following the injury, in which he came up short trying to corral Everth Cabrera's second-inning single to left field. Gregorius initially stayed in the game, but he left after four innings because he felt soreness on a check-swing.
"You just saw an awkward roll; right away, I've seen it with [Hideki] Matsui and [Brett] Gardner in the outfield in left," Cashman said. "[Didi's] obviously not playing today, we have Monday off and the next home game is Wednesday. More than enough time hopefully to not be an issue."
Gregorius said that he would not swing a bat on Sunday, and he felt no need to watch the video of the play.
"No; I felt it, so I already know how it is," Gregorius said.
