Sterling presented with replacement Emmy Awards

NEW YORK -- John Sterling used to keep his 12 local Emmy Awards on a mantelpiece in the living room of his New Jersey apartment, where they were among the many possessions that the Yankees broadcaster lost in a January fire that displaced hundreds of residents.

Sterling was presented with replacements for those awards in a ceremony prior to the Yankees' game against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium on Friday, courtesy of the New York Chapter of the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he continues to be touched by the outpouring of support.

"It's just a lovely gesture on their part. I thank them," Sterling said. "People have treated me fabulously. That's the best part of it. It's so heart-warming."

Sterling said that he is still commuting to Yankee Stadium from a hotel following the Jan. 21 inferno, which ravaged the Avalon residences in Edgewater, N.J. In addition to the Emmys, Sterling lost four of his five World Series rings, treasured family photographs and his collections of books and music.

"I have gotten enough clothes now where I've replaced my wardrobe," Sterling said. "I'm moving into a brand-new apartment in May; I've signed the lease and written the checks. Once I get there, it'll seem more normal when I go from my own place to the Stadium."
