A-Rod 'having fun' as he works his way back

BALTIMORE -- Alex Rodriguez said on Saturday that he "can't wait to get back" into the lineup, but he's not sure when he will begin a Minor League rehab assignment.

"So far, no issues," Rodriguez told the Associated Press in Tampa, Fla. "I'm just working really hard. I'm having fun. It's exciting to be back on the field."

Rodriguez has been facing live pitching at the Yankees' complex as he returns from January surgery on his left hip. He also is fielding grounders, running the bases and doing sliding drills.

"I feel like my swing is definitely getting back to form," he said, "[and I'm defensively] moving better the last few days. Everything is coming along."

Rodriguez is "absolutely" fine with the Yankees following this week's events, which included a verbal rebuke by general manager Brian Cashman after Rodriguez said on Twitter that he had been cleared to begin playing in games.

Rodriguez and Cashman later conducted a conference call to clear the air, with team president Randy Levine also on the call.

"Ready to get back on the field," Rodriguez said. "All good."

Stewart disagrees with CC's self-assessment

BALTIMORE -- CC Sabathia was asked to evaluate his season, and his nostrils flared before he wisely bit his tongue.

"I almost cussed right there," Sabathia said, taking a long pause. "Not very good. Not very good."

Sabathia took a no-hitter into the sixth inning on Friday before coughing up a three-run lead en route to New York's 4-3 loss to Baltimore, and he is always the first to shoulder the blame when things go awry.

But catcher Chris Stewart has been encouraged by Sabathia's improving velocity, which was a popular talking point early in the season but has become less so as the weather has warmed.

Sabathia has picked up about a mile per hour on his fastball each month, from an average of 90.67 mph in April to 92.32 mph in June, according to Brooks Baseball. His average fastball velocity on Friday was 93.05 mph, his best of the season.

"His fastball had a little more life on it," Stewart said. "Maybe it was the weather. It's warming up, and his body is feeling better out there. He was definitely really good out there."

That may calm the velocity concerns, but Sabathia will now enter July with an 8-6 record and 4.15 ERA in 17 starts, and having allowed a team-leading 17 home runs.

Sabathia said that he does not feel far off, which makes any issues all the more frustrating. But Stewart, informed of Sabathia's evaluation of his season, doesn't quite agree.

"He's being a little bit hard [on himself], but obviously he's not CC-like this year," he said. "Like [Friday] -- it's an ERA-inflator, but there's nothing much you can do. He's had a couple of those games this year.

"He's un-CC-like maybe numbers-wise, but as far as intensity and the way he goes about it, he's the same guy. It's just tough that his numbers aren't with him this year."

Girardi says Gardner worthy of All-Star nod

BALTIMORE -- Brett Gardner's name has not yet appeared on any of the All-Star balloting updates, but manager Joe Girardi is hoping that oversight will be corrected.

"I think he's worthy of being on the All-Star team," Girardi said. "I think he's had a great first half defensively, offensively. He's played every day. I believe he's an All-Star."

Gardner, 29, entered play on Saturday batting .288 with seven home runs, 29 RBIs and 11 stolen bases in 79 games, bouncing back from a season in which he was limited to 16 games because of an injured right elbow.

Gardner has hit safely in 26 of 32 games since May 24, batting .331 over that stretch. He had a .347 on-base percentage and .450 slugging percentage entering Saturday.

The only Yankees outfielder to rank near the top of any balloting update was Ichiro Suzuki, who clocked in at 15th at each checkpoint. Robinson Cano has led AL second basemen at each update.

Jeter may be ready to begin game action in Minors

BALTIMORE -- The latest update on Derek Jeter is that he has made it through all of his simulated at-bats fine and may be in position to progress to game action.

According to manager Joe Girardi, Jeter had more simulated at-bats on Saturday in Tampa, Fla., and should soon progress to a Minor League rehab game.

"With the simulated at-bats, I think the next step would be a game, like a rehab game," Girardi said.

Girardi said that Jeter has not yet run the bases, but that he has run arcs on the infield. Jeter has reported no problems with his surgically repaired left ankle, which he reinjured during Spring Training.

"Everything has been good," Girardi said.

Girardi said it is likely that both Jeter and Alex Rodriguez would need a full 20-day Minor League assignment before they could rejoin the big league roster.

"I think you have to assume it, just because they haven't played at all, and the first couple of games, they are going to play four or five innings," Girardi said. "You just have to build yourself up, and it takes time -- kind of like a regular Spring Training.

"You just go day by day and decide when they're ready. They're coming off injuries, so you want to make sure they'll able to go back-to-back-to-back, possibly. It's a little bit different."

Bombers bits

• The Yankees are going with a three-man bench, in part because they plan to have Ivan Nova start one of the four games against the Twins next week at Target Field, but also because their Triple-A roster has been hit by injuries.

Manager Joe Girardi said that the only likely option for a callback from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is outfielder Thomas Neal, who had two hits in 11 at-bats for New York earlier this month. Such other choices as infielder Ronnier Mustelier and outfielder Brennan Boesch remain on the Triple-A disabled list.

• The Yankees entered play on Saturday 5 1/2 games behind the American League East-leading Red Sox, the farthest they've been out of first place this season, but Girardi has not seen any panic in the clubhouse.

"I think their personalities have been really consistent throughout, the winning end and the losing, so I don't think it's wearing them down," he said.

• On this date in 1947, the Yankees started a franchise-record stretch of 19 consecutive victories, outscoring their opponents, 119-41, during the span.

Clerical error, nothing more, behind CC/Phelps switch

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles may have been surprised to see CC Sabathia instead of David Phelps on the lineup card for Friday's game, but the Yankees said there was no switch, just a clerical error.

Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said that Sabathia had always been scheduled to pitch against Baltimore on Friday, but he mistakenly gave the incorrect rotation to the Yankees' director of media relations, Jason Zillo, before the series.

Manager Joe Girardi said that both Sabathia and Phelps, who is pitching on Saturday, were aware of their correct days to pitch. Filling out crossword puzzles in the clubhouse, Phelps was amused to learn that he had briefly been the subject of speculation about a possible injury or trade.

"We felt like there was a good chance that [Sabathia] would pitch one of the three days, so it doesn't change anything about what we're doing," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "I finally just called Joe, and he said, 'Yeah, there was a miscommunication.' I said, 'Fine, thanks.' Short conversation."

Girardi also noted that right-hander Ivan Nova, who pitched well in a spot start against the Rays on June 23, is likely to pick up a start in the upcoming series against the Twins at Target Field.

"We're looking at the schedule day by day, and it kind of depends on if we need him [in relief]," Girardi said. "Our plan is to probably start him in a game in the Minnesota series. That could change."

Girardi still considers right-hander Adam Warren to be the regular long reliever, and he would like to be able to give some of his starters an extra day of rest as the Yankees attack a stretch of 20 games without an off-day.

"We're in an extremely long stretch of 20 games, and you start tacking on three or four starts in a row where it's on normal rest, we think that's pretty taxing," he said. "If during this time you can insert Nova one time -- or if you need to, twice -- we'll do it."

Another productive day in Tampa for Jeter, A-Rod

BALTIMORE -- It is possible that Derek Jeter could begin playing in Minor League rehab games before Alex Rodriguez.

Jeter and Rodriguez had another solid day of workouts at the Minor League complex in Tampa, Fla,. on Friday, and manager Joe Girardi said on Friday that he is not sure which player is closer to facing Minor League competition.

"I'm not sure who you'll see in a game first," Girardi said before the club's game at Camden Yards. "Alex has obviously had more simulated at-bats than Derek, but we'll see how that goes."

Both players spent time in the batter's box on Friday. Rodriguez had five simulated at-bats and ran the bases, hitting two batting practice home runs while also fielding ground balls and sliding on a mat in the outfield during his three hours at the complex.

Jeter had six simulated at-bats, which he also had on Thursday, marking his first time facing live pitching since March. He did not run the bases, but he took BP and fielded grounders on both grass and dirt.

Both A-Rod and Jeter faced 19-year-old Gulf Coast League right-hander Francis Joseph in their at-bats.

Jeter said, "Everything's good," as he departed the complex.

"I think what you think about is that they're getting closer to getting into games," Girardi said. "They're obviously seeing a lot of really young kids throwing at them, and you get a little nervous about that. But until they start getting into games, you don't really start thinking about it."

The Yankees have stuck to a vague timetable, saying that both are expected to return after the All-Star break.

The specifics of Rodriguez's situation, however are confusing. Rodriguez tweeted on Tuesday that he had been cleared to begin playing in rehab games, upsetting general manager Brian Cashman.

After stating that the tweet had been fueled by "pure excitement" about getting back on the field, Rodriguez reportedly backed off the statement in a telephone conversation with Cashman and team president Randy Levine, saying that he isn't actually sure when he could begin playing.

"I don't know who's going to be in a game first, and I don't know which one we're going to get back first," Girardi said.

Bombers beat

• Catcher Francisco Cervelli caught two innings in a simulated game on Friday in Tampa, Fla., and is now holding his right hand -- fractured by a foul tip in April -- behind his back while catching. He also performed bunt-fielding drills but did not throw to bases.

• Outfielder Curtis Granderson (fractured fifth metacarpal of left hand) played catch and ran with a weighted sled attached to his back on Friday. He has not resumed swinging a bat.

• Entering play on Friday, outfielder Ichiro Suzuki had hit safely in each of his last 21 games at Camden Yards since April 5, 2008, batting .385 over that span.

• On this date in 1931, Celtic (of Glasgow, Scotland) defeated the New York Yankees of the American Soccer League, 4-1, in an exhibition game believed to be the first soccer game at the original Yankee Stadium.

Back on field, Jeter's rehab takes step forward

TAMPA, Fla. -- Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter ran on the field Thursday for the first time since re-injuring his surgically repaired left ankle, a big step forward in his recovery.

Jeter, who fractured his ankle in Game 1 of the 2012 American League Championship Series, hasn't played in a game since Spring Training and doesn't know how far he is from advancing to Minor League rehab games. But he passed another checkpoint Thursday, running outdoors at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

"It felt fine. Everything's good," Jeter said. "No problems whatsoever."

Jeter also fielded ground balls at shortstop alongside third baseman Alex Rodriguez and continued to hit Thursday. The next hurdle he'll have to clear, Jeter said, will be running the bases. He will likely have to go through several smaller steps to reach that point, but once he runs the bases, a rehab assignment shouldn't be too far away.

The 39-year-old was unsure Thursday how long he'll have to wait to do either, however.

"It's a constant progression, and that's the last step. I've done everything else," Jeter said. "So hopefully I'll be able to run the bases soon. I don't know when that is, when they tell me. Like I said, I go day to day."

Jeter reiterated his desire to rejoin the Yankees "as soon as possible." It was his understanding that he won't require any more appointments with his surgeon, meaning it's up to the team's training staff to give him the green light going forward.

The Yankees' captain smiled as he said he can "always see the light" at the end of the tunnel. He and the Yankees have declined to set a goal for his return, instead saying he'll be back sometime after the All-Star break, but Jeter seemed pleased with the step he took Thursday.

"You've got to run. You've got to run the bases. That's probably the last step," Jeter said. "I don't know what the progression is in terms of when that happens, but I started running today."
