Yanks playing the hot hand with Reynolds at first

NEW YORK -- When right-handed-hitting Mark Reynolds first joined the Yankees on Aug. 16, he was put into a platoon at first base with left-handed hitter and incumbent starter Lyle Overbay.

But in Friday's 8-5 victory over the Orioles, Reynolds started against right-hander Miguel Gonzalez and batted seventh, not Overbay. Reynolds has been the more productive hitter recently, and manager Joe Girardi said he wanted to keep the hot hand in the lineup.

Reynolds awarded his manager's confidence on Friday, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run to notch his second consecutive three-hit game.

"He made a little adjustment in his swing, he swung the bat really good the other night and he's swung the bat pretty good for us," Girardi said. "I just kind of see, with the adjustments Mark has made, he can be extremely productive. Because we've seen him get extremely hot. ... That would be huge for us."

Reynolds is batting .316, two home runs and seven RBIs since joining the Yankees two weeks ago, and he went 4-for-8 in two games against the Blue Jays this week.

Overbay is batting just .190 with no home runs and one RBI over the same two-week period -- though he did miss two games against the Rays with flu-like symptoms -- and he was hitless in seven at-bats in Toronto.

"As I told Lyle, I'm just going to see what happens. It doesn't mean that [Overbay] won't play tomorrow, because he very well could be back in there tomorrow," Girardi said.

"But we've seen Mark get really hot, he's swinging the bat well right now and let's just see what happens."

Cano returns to lineup, but Nunez sits again

NEW YORK -- Robinson Cano was back in the Yankees lineup Friday after missing Wednesday's game with a bruised left hand, playing second base and batting third against the Orioles.

He bruised the Orioles' pitching staff in his first game back, too, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Cano suffered the injury after getting hit by a pitch from Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ in the first inning of Tuesday's game. Precautionary X-rays taken on Tuesday were negative.

Manager Joe Girardi said before the game that there was a chance Cano could be taken out of the lineup if he didn't get through batting practice without issue. But Cano said he felt good after taking batting practice and his hand didn't seem to be an issue during the game.

"When your team makes a lineup, the last thing you want is missing guys," Cano said before Friday's 8-5 victory over the Orioles. "Hopefully I'll be able to play today and it's just one day [missed]. Good thing it was nothing worse than that."

Infielder Eduardo Nunez was also injured in Tuesday's game, twisting his knee while trying to field a ground ball after replacing Cano at second base. Nunez sat out on Wednesday did not play on Friday, but said he expected to be available for the Yankees if they needed him.

"I think I can play today if they need me," Nunez said. "And help."

Cano is batting .307 with 24 home runs and 87 RBIs this season. Nunez is hitting .248 with one home run, 20 RBIs and eight stolen bases.

Girardi stresses playoff implications of homestand

NEW YORK -- The Yankees entered Friday's game five games back for the second spot in the Wild Card standings and eight games back in the American League East race, but they still have an opportunity to make up ground in their playoff chase.

New York started a critical 10-game home stand on Friday, and seven of those games are against the Orioles -- who are 1 1/2 games ahead of the Yankees in the Wild Card race -- and the AL East-leading Red Sox.

"I know we have to play awfully well to get to where we want," manager Joe Girardi said. "And we have an opportunity to pass teams that are in front of us because we're playing them, but we're going to have to play really good baseball."

In fact, this weekend could play a pivotal role in the Wild Card race for all the teams involved. The Yankees are playing the Orioles, the Wild Card-leading A's are playing the Rays -- who are second in the Wild Card standings -- and the Indians, who are one game ahead of the Yankees in the standings, are playing the AL Central-leading Tigers.

Overall, 10 of the Yankees' remaining 29 games are against teams ahead of them in the Wild Card standings.

Girardi predicted earlier that the Yankees would have to win 93 games to make the postseason, because that was the same number of wins that earned the Orioles and Rangers Wild Card spots last year.

The Yankees would have to go 23-6 over their final 29 games to reach that win total this season.

"I think they would have had to be on another planet to not know how important this stretch of games is," Girardi said. "They understand. These guys are used to playing in October, and that's our goal."

Hughes' next start pushed back to Monday

NEW YORK -- The Yankees announced on Friday that Phil Hughes will have his next start pushed back one day.

Hughes was originally slated to pitch Sunday's series finale against the Orioles, but he will now pitch Monday against the White Sox. Andy Pettitte will start on Sunday.

The right-handed Hughes has struggled throughout the season, compiling a 4-13 record and a 4.91 ERA. He hasn't won a start since July 2, and he's lost 11 of his last 13 decisions.

Hughes was knocked around for five runs -- three earned -- over 4 2/3 innings in a loss against Toronto on Monday. Pettitte, on the other hand, threw seven shutout innings in a win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday.

First All-Star save was easy as 1-2-3 for Mariano

Written By limadu on Jumat, 30 Agustus 2013 | 14.25

By Cash Kruth / MLB.com | 8/28/2013 10:00 A.M. ET

As Mariano Rivera prepares to retire, the closer's farewell tour has become a central subplot to the season. Major League Baseball's all-time saves leader has been greeted warmly in each of his road stops, and the Yankees are planning a ceremony of their own to honor Rivera's illustrious career in September.

Rivera will be the last active player to regularly wear uniform No. 42, with the number having been retired throughout MLB in 1997 to honor the achievements of barrier-breaking great Jackie Robinson. During his 19-year big league career, Rivera has also chiseled his own mark on the number's legacy. In honor of Rivera and his contributions, MLB.com is commemorating 42 notable moments from Rivera's career -- the 42 Days of Mo.

Mariano Rivera's first All-Star Game was a sign of things to come for the Yankees closer and all-time great.

Three up, three down and drive home safely, folks.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest teams of all-time, the 1998 Yankees weren't tested much. They had the American League East all but wrapped up by the All-Star break, and they cruised through the AL Division Series, surrendering one run in three games to a Rangers club with baseball's No. 2-ranked offense.

But ask any player on that '98 roster when the club felt the most adversity, and they'll tell you the AL Championship Series against the Cleveland Indians offered the first taste of hardship.

Health of Jeter, A-Rod a balancing act for Yankees

NEW YORK -- It took until this week -- the Yankees' 131st game of the season to be exact -- for there to be a night in which both Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez carried their gloves onto the field together.

There was no great celebration as the two veterans manned the left side of the infield, just an understanding of the situation at hand. As Rodriguez puts it, the Yankees "need wins like oxygen," and their chances increase if Jeter and A-Rod can find a way to stay in the lineup.

"The tricky stretch is the next stretch, the 17 days in a row," manager Joe Girardi said. "That's the tricky stretch, with day games after night games. I think Alex might be a little further ahead than Jeet because he's been playing longer, but I feel pretty good about them."

After a season filled with false starts, Jeter finally has more games played in a Yanks uniform (eight) than as a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRider (seven). The captain appeared all three nights on the artificial turf of Toronto's Rogers Centre, going 3-for-12 while legging out his first double of the season.

"I think I've missed more games to injury this year than in 20 years combined," Jeter said, correctly. "It seems like everything's happened this particular year. It's hard to believe, but you move forward. You can't change anything that's happened."

And with 21 games now under his belt, Rodriguez has finally seemed to block out the noise surrounding the appeal of his 211-game suspension, telling his legal team to keep its banter to a minimum so he can focus on baseball.

"I think it's important," Rodriguez said. "I love the game of baseball. I think there are a lot of great stories going on. For us, we need 100 percent of our attention and focus and work ethic on the game of baseball."

Rodriguez checked into Thursday's off-day batting .282 with four home runs -- giving him 651 lifetime -- and nine RBIs, wielding a .364 on-base percentage and a .462 slugging percentage over 78 at-bats. As anyone who watched Yankees games earlier this summer can attest, the lineup needed that help.

Naturally, the physical condition of his key veterans is a major concern for Girardi, and there is always an ear pressed against the trainer's office when it comes to Jeter and Rodriguez.

Jeter has been told to "run under control" to guard against yet another injury, and he acknowledged this week that there is some danger with not having worked out his lower half normally since suffering a left ankle fracture in last year's playoffs.

Even with the ball jumping off his bat -- something that only happened intermittently during his long Minor League rehab stint -- Rodriguez rates himself as "a work in progress," believing his body is tuned up for a calendar that sits in late March or early April.

"Let's not forget, he's 38, too," Girardi said of Rodriguez. "It's not easy running out there every day when you're 38. You feel like if you play him every day, sometimes it gets counterproductive."

It's no easier at 39, in Jeter's case. He departed on Wednesday saying that everything felt fine, which was certainly preferable to the troubled tone in backup shortstop Eduardo Nunez's voice a few lockers down, fearing the worst as he headed for an MRI in New York.

Jeter said that his "job here is to play, so I want to be in there," a statement that has held true for pretty much every day of Jeter's career. Girardi joked that he did not even need to check to see how Jeter felt before Wednesday's game.

"We all know the answer. It's a five-letter word," Girardi said, pausing for effect. (The word was "great.")

Rodriguez has not complained of any maladies, but Girardi has tried to be proactive. He didn't play Rodriguez in the series finale against the Rays at Tropicana Field on Sunday, a day game after a night game, and is actively scanning the schedule for other opportunities to keep him fresh.

"I definitely feel like hitting those balls, especially in the high-to-mid 90s, that's definitely an improvement," Rodriguez said. "I'm still trying to get my legs underneath me, and I'm working hard on that right before every game. So far, so good."

The Yanks believe that it will take at least 90 wins to extend their season into October, and as they were reminded this week in Toronto, there are no gimmes on the schedule. For Jeter and Rodriguez, it's imperative to stay on board for a strong push -- all the while doing so "under control," somehow.

"This homestand is extremely important," Jeter said. "We play Baltimore first, so we have to come ready to play, because they have a great team as well. They're in the thick of things, so it's going to be a challenge for us. We have to take it one day at a time."

Yanks schedule MRI on Nunez's injured knee

By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com | 8/29/2013 12:25 A.M. ET

TORONTO -- There were giggles in the Yankees' clubhouse when a wheelchair mysteriously replaced the seat in front of Eduardo Nunez's locker, a reference to the infielder's theatrics after crumpling to the artificial turf with a right knee injury on Tuesday.

Vernon Wells, Joba Chamberlain and David Huff took the prank further, scurrying out with athletic tape to "chalk" a body outline near second base at Rogers Centre. It was all in good fun until Nunez had to cut short batting practice ahead of Wednesday's 7-2 Yankees loss to the Blue Jays, after which the club revealed that Nunez will undergo an MRI exam on the knee in New York on Thursday.

Mark Reynolds made his first career start at second base on Wednesday, filling in for Nunez, who said that he caught a spike in the turf during the eighth inning of Tuesday's 7-1 win over the Blue Jays.

"Weird things happen to me all the time, I guess," Nunez said.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said before Wednesday's game that Nunez was only about "50-50" to play, and he never entered. The Yankees were also without second baseman Robinson Cano, who is not expected to play until Friday at the earliest because of a left hand bruise.

Girardi said that he spoke to general manager Brian Cashman about calling up an infielder, but no move was made.

"We talked about it a little bit, but I didn't want to," Girardi said. "We probably would have had to get rid of a pitcher, and I didn't want to do that for one day."

Girardi said that he had been amused by the players' ribbing of Nunez.

"It's to be expected -- it's good," Girardi said. "It's good that they're in a good mood in there, and they're loose, and they had a little fun."

Nunez had also laughed about the pranks in the clubhouse, guessing that either Derek Jeter or Cano had been involved somehow.

"I think these guys have to be part of this team," Nunez said. "I've got to find out; do something, too."

Pinstripes have brought out best in Soriano

TORONTO -- Alfonso Soriano speaks often about his level of comfort at home plate, and the numbers certainly back that up. It's obvious that he has also felt incredibly at home slipping back into his old Yankees uniform.

Soriano has hit 10 home runs in 25 August games for the Yankees, marking the first time he has reached double digits in homers for a calendar month since April 2011, when he accomplished the feat with the Cubs.

The 37-year-old slugger, who homered twice in New York's 7-1 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday, joined Tino Martinez (2005) as the only Yankees to hit 10 homers in a calendar month at age 37 or older.

"It's great to me," Soriano said. "When I left here [in 2004], I wasn't sad, because it's part of the game, but I thought that I had something to prove to myself, my teammates and the fans.

"I'm just playing my game. That's what I like to do. Focus every day, try to get better and try to show the people that I can keep doing it."

The Yankees were attracted to Soriano because of the power he would bring to the lineup, but he has proven to be helpful in other areas as well. Soriano's baserunning has been better than advertised, and manager Joe Girardi has also appreciated his outfield defense.

"He's played really, really good out there," Girardi said. "From what we heard, he said he worked really hard in Chicago at it."

Girardi believes that Soriano has responded to being dropped into a veteran clubhouse fighting for a playoff spot, comparing it to the effect that joining the Yankees seemed to have on Ichiro Suzuki after his July acquisition from the Mariners last year.

"It's kind of like Ich; Ich came from a club where it was mostly kids," Girardi said. "The Cubs are a lot of kids, so it may be a little more difficult to relate, in a sense. Now, he gets around people his age and it's probably easier."

Bombers bits

• The Yankees have set their rotation for the upcoming weekend series against the Orioles. CC Sabathia, Ivan Nova and Phil Hughes will start in the set. There had been speculation that manager Joe Girardi might push Hughes back to next week's series against the White Sox.

Zoilo Almonte and Travis Hafner are hitting tee-and-toss and could start taking batting practice by the end of the week. It is likely that they both could join the Yankees after rosters expand on Sunday.

• Michael Pineda is throwing side sessions, and David Phelps is moving closer to throwing. Both recovering right-handers are in Tampa, Fla., and it is possible that they could help the Yankees out of the bullpen in September.

• On this date in 1977, Ron Guidry pitched his third shutout of the year in a 1-0 victory over the Rangers. He faced just one batter over the minimum, permitting two hits. Graig Nettles tripled and scored on a Reggie Jackson single for the game's only run.

Soriano follows 399th homer with No. 400

By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com | 8/28/2013 12:35 A.M. ET

TORONTO -- For weeks, Alfonso Soriano has been hearing from friends and family members eagerly tracking his progress toward 400 career homers. Once the Yankees slugger got within striking distance, he did not keep them waiting very long.

Soriano hit his 399th and 400th career home runs in consecutive at-bats on Tuesday night, connecting for both drives off of Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ in the Yankees' 7-1 victory at Rogers Centre.

"I didn't want the same thing that happened when I got my 2,000th [hit], when it took a couple of games," Soriano said. "As soon as I got the first one, I just put in my mind, 'Let me swing if I see something close to home plate, try to hit another one and get it out of the way.' Thank God it happened."

Soriano became the seventh player to hit his 400th homer as a Yankee, joining a select group comprised of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson, Gary Sheffield and Alex Rodriguez.

The homers -- a three-run shot in the first inning and a solo blast in the third -- were Soriano's 10th and 11th since he joined the Yankees from the Cubs in a July 26 trade.

It marked Soriano's sixth multihomer game of the season and the 36th of his Major League career, giving him 28 homers overall this season.

"I just think about making a good swing," Soriano said. "I never try to think about hitting homers, because that never happens. I just try to make a good swing, see the ball good and try to hit it hard."

Soriano also became the sixth player in Major League history to reach 400 homers, 2,000 hits and 250 stolen bases, joining Willie Mays, Andre Dawson, Barry Bonds, Sheffield and A-Rod.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that Soriano has seemed to be rejuvenated by his return to pinstripes, in which he started his Major League career in 1999.

"What he's done here in the month of August, I'm sure people are talking about it," Girardi said. "There's baseball left in this guy, and he can have a really good year."

Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte, Tuesday's winning pitcher, said that the 36-year-old Soriano has been an "energizing" force for the club.

"He looks like a young man out there," Pettitte said. "I know he's not. Hopefully, we can keep it going. He's doing a great job for us, that's for sure."

Soriano started his big league career with the Yankees in 1999 and hit 98 homers for New York before being traded to the Rangers in the February 2004 deal that brought Rodriguez to the Bronx.

Soriano hit 64 home runs in his two seasons with Texas, then enjoyed a 46-homer campaign with the Nationals in 2006 before signing as a free agent with the Cubs, with whom he slugged 181 of his career home runs.

"When I retire, I can think about what I did in the game," Soriano said. "I'm very proud. The talent that I've got, God gave it to me. I never think I'm going to hit 400 homers in the big leagues with my size, but I think I work hard and try to get better every day. That's what I've got."

Gardner notches 500th hit of career

Written By limadu on Selasa, 27 Agustus 2013 | 14.24

By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com | 8/26/2013 10:29 P.M. ET

TORONTO -- Outfielder Brett Gardner notched a small milestone on Monday at Rogers Centre, logging the 500th hit of his Major League career.

Gardner's hit was a soft single in the fifth inning off Blue Jays right-hander R.A. Dickey that dropped in front of right fielder Moises Sierra.

He was stranded when Dickey got Robinson Cano to fly out to center field, ending the inning.

A-Rod takes Dickey deep for 650th career homer

TORONTO -- Third baseman Alex Rodriguez hit the 650th home run of his career on Monday, connecting for a solo shot in the fifth inning off the Blue Jays' R.A. Dickey at Rogers Centre.

The homer, Rodriguez's third of the season, struck a wall behind the Toronto bullpen in right field and tied the score at 2.

"Alex hit a pretty good pitch; it was a knuckleball down," Dickey said. "He likes the ball down and out over the plate, and that one just happened to go there. He did a good job of hitting it out. He has opposite-field power, he always has."

Rodriguez ranks fifth on baseball's all-time homer list and is closing ground on Hall of Famer Willie Mays (660). Rodriguez's contract includes a $6 million bonus payable if he ties Mays.

The shot off Dickey was Rodriguez's first since his emotional shot off Boston's Ryan Dempster on Aug. 18, which came innings after Dempster intentionally hit Rodriguez with a 92-mph fastball, earning a five-game suspension.

Rodriguez entered Monday in a 3-for-19 skid over the six games following that contest at Fenway Park.

Girardi: Yanks as 'whole' as they've been all year

TORONTO -- It took until game No. 131, but manager Joe Girardi was finally able to scribble his signature at the bottom of a lineup card that closely resembled what the Yankees had anticipated this spring.

Derek Jeter's activation off the disabled list marked the first time this season that he and Alex Rodriguez have played together, and the Yankees also have Curtis Granderson healthy following his two stints on the DL.

"It's probably as whole as we've been all year long," Girardi said. "We've had guys in and out of the lineup for different periods, but this is probably as whole as we've been."

Changes have obviously been made along the way; Monday's first baseman, Lyle Overbay, was a last-minute addition this spring when Mark Teixeira's season was in jeopardy, and Alfonso Soriano was acquired from the Cubs in late July.

By and large, Girardi is pleased with the look of the batting order. He added that this time the Yankees won't necessarily have to consider Jeter a savior, as they did in July.

"We had lost Tex and Grandy for the second time and [Jeter] was the guy who was closest, and we were struggling," he said. "We weren't hitting any homers right-handed, and there was a lot of excitement [about Jeter's return].

"Now we've gotten a lot of other guys back, and it's just more that you're adding another good piece to the puzzle."

Nunez to serve in utility role with Jeter back

TORONTO -- Derek Jeter's return from the disabled list has once again bumped infielder Eduardo Nunez to the bench, and the Yankees plan to use him in more of a utility role going forward.

Because the Yankees do not expect Jayson Nix (fractured left hand) to return this season, manager Joe Girardi will look to Nunez to back up at shortstop, third base and even second base.

"He's really our only other option at second base right now," Girardi said. "Nixy's down, we're not going to get him back. It probably makes some sense that [Nunez] takes some ground balls there."

Girardi is not certain if he would choose Nunez over the recently signed Mark Reynolds at third base.

"I'll look at some matchups and see," he said. "The good thing is, I feel I can use them both, which is nice."

Bombers bits

• Right-hander Preston Claiborne was optioned to Class A Tampa after Sunday's game, clearing a roster spot for Jeter.

Girardi explained that the Yankees wanted to keep two long men in Adam Warren and David Huff, and since Tampa's season ends on Sept. 1, Claiborne can be recalled the next day.

• Rodriguez batted sixth on Monday. Girardi wanted to split up left-handers so he did not have to stack Granderson, Overbay and Ichiro Suzuki against Toronto's R.A. Dickey.

• On this date in 1960, the Yankees hit five home runs -- including Yogi Berra's 11th inning walk-off shot -- to beat the Indians, 7-6.

Jeter ready to move forward in injury-plagued campaign

TORONTO -- The batting stance looks the same as ever, as does the confident strut to home plate. Even the bat, that black Louisville Slugger P72, is the identical model Derek Jeter has been swinging through strike zones for nearly two decades.

But there has been a change for the captain, who returned to the lineup on Monday and went 0-for-3 with a walk in New York's 5-2 loss to Toronto at Rogers Centre. Jeter hears "voices" in his mind instructing him to "run under control" after contact, a reminder that everything isn't what it always has been.

"I'll try to do as much as I can to keep strong for this last month, but all I can do is go out and play and hope everything's fine," said Jeter, who was activated from the disabled list on Monday and batted second against the Blue Jays. "I can't change anything that's happened."

Jeter may still not be 100 percent as he returns from a strained right calf -- just the latest injury in what he has called a "nightmare" season that featured three stints on the DL -- but the Yankees will gladly accept whatever percentage he is.

"He looked fine," said manager Joe Girardi. "Everything looked OK to me. I'm curious to see how he feels [on Tuesday], but it looked OK."

Facing Toronto's R.A. Dickey, the 39-year-old Jeter jogged down the first-base line after grounding out to shortstop in the first inning, then seemed to run slightly harder on a double-play grounder in the fifth.

He walked in the fifth, then struck out in the seventh facing left-hander Aaron Loup.

Jeter said that it was an unwelcome challenge having to face Dickey's knuckleball in what was just his sixth Major League game of the year.

"It's not fun. Ironically, I faced two [knuckleballers] when I was in Scranton," he said. "You just throw everything out the window and hope it goes in the direction you're swinging."

This has been the most frustrating year of Jeter's career by far. He has missed more games (125) over his three trips to the DL in 2013 than he did in his prior five stints combined (82), and has still played more games as a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRider than as a Yankee.

"It's good having him back," Girardi said. "It gives us more depth. He's a guy that has been very successful at the top of the order and has played very good shortstop for us. It's good to have him back."

But at what percentage? Jeter joked before the game that he had been running at "93.7 percent" the last time he played, a light-hearted attempt to pin a numeric value on something that can't really be quantified.

Interestingly, though, he acknowledged on Monday that he has not been able to work out his legs normally since fracturing his left ankle in pursuit of a ground ball during last year's American League Championship Series.

He suggested that the resulting weakness may have contributed to his other injuries -- a new fracture in his left ankle during Spring Training, then a strained right quadriceps in his first game off the DL, on July 11 against the Royals.

"I wish I would have had more time to do things, but I didn't, and we are where we are," he said. "So now let's move forward, and hopefully, there's no more issues."

Knowing that he may have to treat Jeter with some caution, Girardi plans to watch Jeter closely and make decisions each day based upon how the veteran feels.

"You kind of think the more time he gets away from the ankle injury and the stronger it gets, it should even out," Girardi said. "It should be OK, but we'll see what happens."

Jeter said after Monday's game that his job is to play, so he would tell Girardi that he wants to play -- not exactly groundbreaking news to anyone who has read the transcript of one of his postgame interviews in the last two decades.

He knows it can do no good to think about what has already transpired this year, but acknowledged that it has been difficult to completely put all of the injuries out of his mind. The voices are still there.

"I'm hoping I have no other problems, I really am," he said. "I can't tell you what I'm going to do. I'm trying to be smart. I guess the game will dictate it. I don't really think you can play not to get hurt. I think that's when you get hurt."
