By entering this Promotion, each entrant gives his/her express permission to be contacted by Sponsor by telephone, e-mail and/or postal mail for Promotion purposes. Sabathia feels good after second rehab outing

By Austin Laymance / MLB.com | 7/2/2014 10:22 P.M. ET

TRENTON, N.J. -- CC Sabathia admits it's been tough to watch the Yankees play while he recovers from a right knee injury that has kept him on the disabled list since May 11, but the left-hander is getting closer to returning to a big league mound.

Sabathia said he felt good physically after his second Minor League rehab start on Wednesday and is on track in his progression from right knee inflammation. He made 55 pitches over 3 2/3 innings with Double-A Trenton against the Portland Sea Dogs, an increase from a 37-pitch outing on Saturday with Class A Advanced Tampa.

He was charged with five runs (three earned) on five hits. Sabathia struck out two, walked one and hit a batter. His fastball sat at 90-91 mph and he reached 94 mph in the first inning.

"I felt good. The secondary pitches weren't that good, but my fastball I felt was coming off pretty good," Sabathia said. "I feel good health-wise, so I'll be ready to go."

Sabathia said he did not know what his next step would be, though another rehab start appears likely. He's still building arm strength and working on his command.

"I need to work on my secondary pitches a little more," Sabathia said. "Changeup was cutting, slider wasn't as sharp as I wanted it to be, so we'll do some work on those things. But overall, I felt pretty good."

Sabathia said he's more concerned with how he feels at this point as opposed to results.

"Results, I guess, will come when they matter," he said. "Right now, I'm just trying to make sure that I can give max effort out there and not feel anything and be healthy."

After retiring the first batter he faced, Sabathia allowed a single through the left side of the infield and a double down the third-base line. He then got a pair of flyouts to center field to end the frame, one of which scored a run.

Sabathia recorded two flyouts to open the second, and he then hit a left-handed batter with a pitch. He got a ground ball to third to end the inning. In the third, Sabathia allowed a leadoff triple, walked the next batter then allowed a hard-hit double to straightaway center. He responded with a strikeout before making a nice barehand play on a chopper back to the mound for the third out. It was the only time Sabathia's knee was tested in the field.

With his pitch count at 43, Sabathia returned for the fourth inning. He faced four batters, striking out one. Not long after Trenton manager Tony Franklin removed Sabathia from the game, a heavy downpour started and a rain delay ensued.

"Perfect timing, perfect timing," Sabathia said with a smile. "I really wanted to face the hitters and not have to finish it up in the bullpen or on the side. So that was a good thing."

But watching the Yankees struggle to keep pace in the American League East race has not been a pleasant experience for Sabathia, who is itching to get back on the field and contribute.

"It's been tough to watch, man," he said. "We've been just trying to grind. But it's always hard when you're not there. It's hard to watch on TV, it's hard to listen to, so hopefully I can get back as soon as possible and start helping the guys."

Yankees to be first to pay tribute to Gehrig

Written By limadu on Rabu, 02 Juli 2014 | 14.24

By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com | 7/1/2014 9:06 P.M. ET

NEW YORK -- The Yankees will commemorate the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's "Luckiest Man" speech on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, kicking off Major League Baseball's league-wide effort to spread awareness of and raise funds for ALS research.

Gehrig's famous speech was delivered on July 4, 1939, at Yankee Stadium between games of a doubleheader against Washington. The Yankees will hold pregame ceremonies to honor Gehrig's speech on Wednesday, and all 30 clubs plan to recognize Gehrig's speech before their scheduled games on Friday.

"The Yankees have to be leaders in this project," said Debbie Tymon, the Yankees' senior vice president of marketing. "It's Lou Gehrig's disease, so we really need to kick this off. We really need to lead the awareness, lead the fight and impact the fundraising, because it's part of our history."

The sides of the bases will bear special logos, marking the date of Gehrig's speech as well as his famous phrase, "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth."

The Yankees will wear a special uniform patch honoring Gehrig, and the scoreboard will run a video featuring Derek Jeter and first basemen from all 30 teams reciting Gehrig's speech. The video will also be played before all Major League games on Friday.

An on-field ceremony will include Kevin Brown Thompson, who lives with ALS and is an advocate with the ALS Association Greater NY Chapter; the Goldsmith family, who were part of the 70th anniversary Gehrig commemoration at Yankee Stadium and who mourn the loss of Michael Goldsmith to ALS (Goldsmith spearheaded the effort to get MLB to recognize this day league-wide); and U.S. Navy Lt. Commander (Select) Matthew Bellina, who was diagnosed with ALS in April of this year.

Dorine Gordon, the president & CEO of the ALS Association Greater New York Chapter, will also be on-site with a number of patients and their families.

"We are proud to carry on the legacy of a great role model to many both on and off the field and grateful to Lou's team, the New York Yankees, for their long-standing support of the New York Chapter of the ALS Association," Gordon said.

"Our ultimate goal is to find a cure, but until then we work every day to do our best to provide our patients and their families the resources they not only need to fight but also to live with ALS -- access to specialized treatment in our multidisciplinary clinics, equipment for those who cannot afford it and compassionate support."

The first 18,000 guests in attendance for Wednesday's game will receive a Lou Gehrig bobblehead, presented by AT&T. The Yankees worked closely with the Twins in planning their own ceremony, and the Twins will distribute the same items before New York's game on Friday at Target Field.

Tymon said in addition to those invited guests taking part in on-field ceremonies, several suites for Wednesday's game have been reserved for families who have been impacted by ALS.

"It's a very emotional day for everyone," Tymon said. "We're giving the message to please be aware, please support this fight, please support any of the major ALS charities, because in essence it could happen to anyone. For these families that come out, it's a bright spot in their day. They can really be a part of this fight. They need to know people care."

CC to make next rehab start at Double-A on Thursday

Written By limadu on Selasa, 01 Juli 2014 | 14.25

NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia is scheduled throw around 50 pitches during his next Minor League rehabilitation start for Double-A Trenton against Portland on Thursday.

Sabathia, who has been sidelined since May 11 with fluid and inflammation in his right knee, made his first rehab start for Class A Advanced Tampa on Saturday, when he threw 37 pitches and said he "could not have been happier with the way he felt physically."

The Yankees still have not determined the number of starts Sabathia will need before he returns to the Majors.

"We'll just take it one step at a time. Obviously, we have to maintain health and extend that pitch count," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "He's only at 37 pitches right now, so he's going to build up to around 50 and then just keep going from there. Hopefully, he's on the horizon."

Cashman watched video from Sabathia's outing and said he was especially pleased with the way Sabathia moved around covering first base.

"That was noticeable, more so than anything else," Cashman said. "You're looking at if the knee's bothering him or what have you, and at least in that outing, he looked like he was jumping around pretty athletic and he looked healthy."

Cashman ready to navigate trade market

NEW YORK -- The July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline is still about a month away, but Yankees general manager Brian Cashman does not want to wait.

"I'm ready to rock and roll," Cashman said prior to Monday's game against the Rays. "But again, I think those who have [trade pieces] are taking their time. Certain pieces, it's been communicated that if they get what they want, which would be an extreme haul, they're ready to move sooner than later."

Cashman's comments reiterated his point from Saturday that he was actively trying to improve the Yankees, and the reason the team has not executed a trade yet is "not because a lack of phone calls."

Monday's game against the Rays is the Yankees' 81st game this season, officially the halfway point in the schedule. The Yankees (41-39), two games out of first place in the American League East, were tied with the Blue Jays and Orioles in the loss column entering Monday.

"We're fortunate to be two games out with poor performance and injuries," Cashman said.

That has especially hindered the starting rotation. Ivan Nova was lost for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, Michael Pineda is not projected back until sometime in August and CC Sabathia just completed his first Minor League rehab start and is expected to return in the next few weeks.

And their replacements in the rotation have offered mostly mixed results. Vidal Nuno is 2-4 with a 5.42 ERA, David Phelps was 3-4 with a 4.35 ERA entering Monday and rookie Chase Whitley has dropped his last two starts, allowing 13 runs in his last 7 1/3 innings.

Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija and Rays left-hander David Price, who is scheduled to start against the Yankees on Tuesday, are two of the top targets around the Majors, but both teams are expected to have a high asking price in exchange. Other starters such as Jason Hammel (Cubs), Cliff Lee (Phillies) and Ian Kennedy (Padres) are expected to be more in the Yankees' price range.

"I just think it's always difficult to acquire anything that's impactful and significant," Cashman said. "Those are tough conversations to have, and they usually hurt a great deal to do so. That's my experience and it seems like it gets harder, rather than easier. But you've got to go through it. You've got to figure it out and find a way if you can run into something that's going to impact you."

Asked if other clubs have been requesting right-hander Dellin Betances in trade talks, the GM declined to comment, but added: "I wouldn't say who gets asked a lot about. But I do know that we have personnel that are very attractive to other clubs -- personnel that I typically wouldn't want to part with. But we'll go through the walk and see where it takes me."

Bombers bits

Since returning from the disabled list with a strained lumbar spine on June 12, Shawn Kelley has struggled for the Yankees. He was brought into the game in the fifth inning against the Red Sox on Sunday, and he walked two, allowed a hit and didn't record an out. He was eventually charged for two runs and said he was a little out of sync mechanically.

"Still got a few things to continue to get better at, as far as getting my leg strength back and arm strength," Kelley said. "I'm ready, I feel good. I can help this team and I can get outs. Yesterday didn't go as planned, but I'm back physically to where I need to be to be successful."

Cashman ready to navigate trade market

CC to make next rehab start at Double-A on Thursday
