Rivera takes time to talk with veterans at the Trop

Written By limadu on Rabu, 24 April 2013 | 14.25

Mariano Rivera answered questions and took pictures with the veterans, and signed baseballs for the attendees. (Rays)

ST. PETERSBURG -- Bill Werts spends most of his time at Tropicana Field working in the media dining room or, toward the end of each home game, taking in the final innings from his wheelchair in the press box.

But the 67-year-old Vietnam War veteran, wheelchair-bound because of multiple sclerosis, ventured into the bowels of the stadium early Tuesday evening to join 16 veterans from Tampa's James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in a small equipment room, where they met with Yankees closer Mariano Rivera for about half an hour. The group included veterans of the Vietnam War, Gulf War, current military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and one man who served in the Army during World War II.

"It's amazing. They're sacrificing," Rivera said. "We go on the field to play. They go on the field to defend us, fight for us, give their life for us. We need more things to be done for these people after they finish. We've seen people that are injured. What gets done for them? We need to get more stuff done."

Rivera talked to the assembled crowd, which also included family members and hospital staffers, then answered questions and took pictures with the veterans. He signed a baseball for each of them, with Tuesday's date below his signature.

He told them about his decision to retire after this season and spoke about his long and successful career. He asked about their families and personal histories, and listened as they all told him what he's meant to them.

"You appreciate [their words]," he said. "They tell you, 'Hey, we appreciate what you do for baseball, we appreciate what you do for your team. I'm glad that you're retiring, because we don't want you to face the team.'"

Werts was the first on Tuesday to voice such an opinion. He's worked at Tropicana Field for 13 years and watched Rivera rack up 60 saves and a 1.73 ERA against the Rays. He told Rivera straight up, "As a Rays fan, I'm so happy you're retiring, because you're so very good."

Rivera laughed and thanked him.

This is what Rivera's farewell tour has been about, he said, and why he sat in a folding chair fielding questions a few hours before the Yankees took the field to play the Rays. He wants to recognize and thank as many fans as possible in each city he visits during his final season.

"I wanted to say thanks. I wanted to be able to say thanks to those fans that have been loyal to baseball and to their teams," he said. "Not necessarily to the Yankees. I hope everybody was a Yankee fan, but they're not. I appreciate that they are fans of baseball.

"You appreciate what those people think about you. ... I like to hear what they think, what do they see, what do they see behind the scenes, what do they think about."

His interest wasn't lost on those visiting from the veterans' hospital. Consider Edward Tomassine, the 93-year-old veteran of World War II who served under Gen. George Patton, took part in the campaign in North Africa and remembered watching lefty Joe Page pitch for the Yankees in the 1940s. He'd never met a Major Leaguer -- "just seen them on TV" -- but he got a chance to speak to one of the game's most accomplished players on Tuesday.

"When somebody looks at you in the eye and they speak to you and take the time to do this -- [Rivera] is a busy guy -- it's pretty fabulous," said Mary Donovan, a recreation therapist at the hospital.

Rivera has experienced similar feelings in the earliest stops of his farewell tour. He's already met with stadium staff and season-ticket holders in Detroit and Cleveland, and one thing stood out to him after speaking with the veterans in St. Petersburg.

"I have learned doing these things that there are people that care," he said. "Perhaps people that sit behind the desk and pass tickets or check tickets, they're aware of what's going on. That's beautiful, and I have learned that. People out there, no matter what, they're here. Rain, storm, cold, heat, they're here. They're behind their desk, and besides doing a job, they love it. That's why I love to hear all those stories and tell them, 'Thank you.'"

People like Werts, for example. He'd never met Rivera, but he always thought the closer had a special "aura" as a pitcher and as a person, and Rivera was everything he'd always expected.

"He was. He was more," Werts said. "But I meant it when I said we're glad he's retiring."

Back keeps Youk out; Tuesday status uncertain

Written By limadu on Selasa, 23 April 2013 | 14.25

ST. PETERSBURG -- Kevin Youkilis was a late scratch from the Yankees' lineup for Monday's 5-1 loss to the Rays at Tropicana Field after his back tightened following batting practice, and he may not be available to play on Tuesday.

Youkilis did not appear in Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Blue Jays in Toronto because of the pain in his back, which he said became sore after he played on the artificial turf at Rogers Centre on Saturday.

"He might be a couple of more days," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said after Monday's game. "We'll see how he feels [Tuesday]. He felt good, then he went through BP and it tightened up a little bit. It is what it is, and we'll get through it."

Youkilis was removed from the lineup at approximately 6:15 p.m. ET. Lyle Overbay replaced Youkilis at first base and went 0-for-3 against Rays left-hander Matt Moore. Jayson Nix remained the starter at third base, also going hitless in three at-bats.

Recovering Granderson empathizes with Jeter

ST. PETERSBURG -- Curtis Granderson could sense the disappointment that Derek Jeter felt after learning he had re-injured his surgically repaired left ankle, a setback that is expected to keep the shortstop on the disabled list until after the All-Star break.

But Granderson, who has been working out with Jeter at the Yankees' Spring Training complex in Tampa, Fla., also believes that Jeter might have found some relief in finally understanding why it was taking him so long to feel normal on a baseball field again.

"It's not like he did his [injury] trying to do too much," Granderson said. "I think it was something that had been lingering in there. From talking to him, it was, 'Man, there's something irritating in there. What is it?' They looked at a bunch of different things, and they finally found it."

Jeter flew last week to be seen by Dr. Robert Anderson, who performed the shortstop's initial reconstructive surgery in October, and a CT scan revealed a small fracture in the captain's left ankle. Jeter is expected to rest his ankle for four to eight weeks before resuming baseball activities, and he will travel to New York this week.

"The big thing for him is he finally knows what it is," Granderson said. "I think he was definitely frustrated, like, 'Why is there something going on? Everything says it's OK. We're trying this, that and the other thing and I'm going out trying to push forward and I can't.'

"There's some cause of that. What is that cause? We finally found out what that cause is. So, as interesting as it sounds, it's a relief to know finally what it is. Obviously, it's still mentally discouraging to understand now what it is -- you've got to sit back for a bit -- but now we know. Rest it up, and whenever it heals up, get back to work -- he'll be back sooner than later."

As for Granderson, he remains on course to rejoin the Yankees sometime around the first week of May, as his fractured right wrist has healed. Granderson hit off a tee and practices soft-toss on Monday, also throwing from a distance of 90 feet.

"It's going to be somewhere in May; don't know exactly when," Granderson said. "Everything is looking pretty good. X-rays have all been good. Everything is feeling good, each step that we've made. The big thing is that whenever I finally start playing, getting at-bats, getting timing and stuff. Once that day comes, we'll have a little better evaluation."

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:  Upon successful registration, follow the instructions provided to receive one (1) virtual bingo card (the "Bingo Card") for each game of the 2012 MLB Postseason played during the Promotion Period (each, a "Postseason Game"). In addition, during the Promotion Period, participants may utilize sharing functionality available via the Promotion upon completion of a successful Contest (the "Sharing Functionality") to receive two (2) additional Bingo Cards. For each eligible individual any entrant notifies or makes aware of the Promotion who clicks on a valid link made available via the Sharing Functionality identifiable as having come from the entrant, such entrant shall receive two (2) additional Bingo Cards (for a total of three (3) Bingo Cards). No additional Bingo Cards will be received other than through verified Sharing Functionality. There is a limit of three (3) Bingo Cards per person and per e-mail address per Postseason Game. Each Bingo Card shall include a 5x5 grid that includes twenty-five (25) tiles (each, a "Tile"). Each Tile will include one (1) randomly selected game outcome for the active Postseason Game. For example, a participant could have a "Josh Hamilton Double" Tile on their Bingo Card which would be automatically marked in the event Josh Hamilton hits a double during a Postseason Game. Any eligible participant who receives a Bingo Card that becomes marked with five (5) Tiles in a vertical, horizontal or diagonal row (each, a "Potential Winning Bingo Card") may be a potential Prize winner, subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with the terms of these Official Rules. (See the Prize Claim Section below for more information.) For purposes of this Promotion, MLB game outcomes will not be updated to reflect any official MLB statistics changes or corrections that may occur after the completion of any Postseason Game. Once each Postseason Game is final following completion of the final out of that game, it will be final for purposes of this Promotion. In the event any Postseason Game is cancelled, postponed or suspended, all Bingo Cards will be void for that game and Sponsor reserves the right to award the applicable Prizes by way of random drawing from among all eligible participants as of the time of such cancellation, postponement or suspension.

PRIZE CLAIMS: In the event you receive a message within MLB.com Gameday notifying you that you have a Potential Winning Bingo Card, you must claim your Potential Winning Bingo Card by following the onscreen instructions provided by no later than ten (10) minutes following the end of the applicable Postseason Game to be eligible for the Drawing (defined below). Failure to claim your Potential Winning Bingo Card within ten (10) minutes following the end of the applicable Postseason Game will render the Potential Winning Bingo Card void and result in Prize forfeiture.

ALL POTENTIAL WINNING BINGO CARDS ARE SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION BY SPONSOR WHOSE DECISIONS ARE FINAL AND BINDING. AN ENTRANT IS NOT A WINNER OF ANY PRIZE, EVEN IF THE PROMOTION SHOULD SO INDICATE, UNLESS AND UNTIL ENTRANT'S ELIGIBILITY, THE POTENTIAL WINNING BINGO CARD AND ENTRANT'S COMPLIANCE WITH THESE OFFICIAL RULES HAVE BEEN VERIFIED BY SPONSOR AND ENTRANT HAS BEEN NOTIFIED THAT SUCH VERIFICATION IS COMPLETE. SPONSOR WILL NOT ACCEPT SCREEN SHOTS OR OTHER EVIDENCE OF WINNING IN LIEU OF ITS VALIDATION PROCESS.

RANDOM DRAWINGS: Approximately thirty (30) minutes following the final out of each Postseason Game, five (5) potential winners will be selected by random drawing from among all eligible participants who claim valid Potential Winning Bingo Cards for that Postseason Game in accordance with these Official Rules (the "Drawing"). Subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with the terms of these Official Rules, the potential winners will be declared official winners of the Sweepstakes (each, a "Winner" and collectively, the "Winners"). Odds of winning a Prize will depend on the total number of Bingo Cards issued and the total number of valid Potential Winning Bingo Cards claimed for each applicable Postseason Game. Limit one (1) Prize per person, per family and per household.

PRIZES:  A maximum of two hundred fifteen (215) prizes (each, a "Prize" and collectively, the "Prizes") will be awarded (i.e. five (5) Prizes per each Postseason Game with a maximum of forty-three (43) Postseason Games), as follows:

For up to twenty-one (21) Postseason Games during the 2012 League Championship Series and the 2012 MLB World Series Championship, each Winner will receive one (1) MLB.TV Offseason Package subscription. ARV of each such Prize: $24.99.

Total ARV of all Prizes: $3172.85.

For the avoidance of doubt, no Prizes will be awarded in connection with any 2012 MLB Postseason game that is not played because it is not necessary.

PRIZE CONDITIONS: All Prize details to be determined in the sole discretion of Sponsor. Each Winner is fully responsible for any and all applicable federal, state and local taxes (including income and withholding taxes). Sponsor reserves the right to substitute any Prize (or any portion thereof) with one of comparable or greater value at its sole and absolute discretion.

NOTIFICATION:  Each potential winner will be notified at the e-mail address, postal address and/or telephone number (in the sole discretion of Sponsor) provided at the time of entry (the "Prize Notification"). In the event that any potential winner does not respond to any such Prize Notification within three (3) days of the date of issuance or declines the Prize for any reason, a disqualification will result, the Prize will be forfeited and, at Sponsor's sole discretion and time permitting, an alternate potential winner may be randomly selected from among all remaining eligible entries. Each potential winner may be required to submit his/her valid social security number and/or other identification to Sponsor and may be required to execute, have notarized and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and Release of Liability and, unless prohibited by law, Publicity, within five (5) days of date of issuance. Failure to submit any identification required by Sponsor or to return the required documents within the specified time period, noncompliance with these Official Rules or the return of the Prize (or any portion thereof) or Prize Notification as undeliverable may result in disqualification and Prize forfeiture and, at Sponsor's sole discretion and time permitting, may cause an alternate potential winner to be randomly selected from among all remaining eligible entries.

WAIVER OF LIABILITY/PUBLICITY RELEASE:  By participating in the Promotion and submitting an entry, each entrant agrees to (i) be bound by these Official Rules, including all entry requirements, and (ii) waive any and all claims against Sponsor, the other MLB Entities, Facebook, Apple, Inc. and each of their respective parents, affiliated companies, subsidiaries, officers, directors, employees, agents, licensees, distributors, dealers, retailers, printers, representatives and advertising and promotion agencies, and any and all other companies associated with the Promotion, and all of their respective officers, directors, employees, agents and representatives (collectively, "Released Parties") for any injury, damage or loss that may occur, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from the participation in the Promotion or from the receipt or use of any Prize (or any portion thereof) or any travel or activity related to the receipt or use of any Prize (or any portion thereof). By entering this Promotion, each entrant gives his/her express permission to be contacted by Sponsor by telephone, e-mail and/or postal mail for Promotion purposes. Each Winner, by acceptance of the Prize, grants to Sponsor and each of its designees the right to publicize such Winner's name, address (city and state of residence), photograph, voice, statements and/or other likeness and prize information for advertising, promotional, trade and/or any other purpose in any media or format now known or hereafter devised, throughout the world, in perpetuity, without limitation and without further compensation, consideration, permission or notification, unless prohibited by law.

Girardi sits Youkilis, who's battling tight back

By Chris Toman / Special to MLB.com | 04/21/2013 1:14 PM ET

TORONTO -- Yankees third baseman Kevin Youkilis, who was forced to leave Saturday's contest in the sixth inning with lower back tightness, was out of the starting lineup for Sunday afternoon's series finale against the Blue Jays.

The 34-year-old said he was able to play, but manager Joe Girardi is exercising caution with the veteran. Girardi said he intended to give Youkilis a day off during the three-game set in Toronto because of the turf at Rogers Centre.

New York plays Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg starting Monday, so upon the conclusion of the club's road trip, it will have played six consecutive games on turf.

"I just want to try to clear it up if we can," Girardi said. "It's good that he feels a lot better, that's a positive thing for us."

Girardi wasn't sure if he would consider using Youkilis as a pinch-hitter, but the third baseman said he'd be available, if needed.

In 16 games with the Yankees, Youkilis is batting .295 with two homers, nine RBIs and an .827 OPS.

With Youkilis sitting out, Jayson Nix was given the start at third base and is batting eighth.

Nix, a former Blue Jays player who appeared in 46 games for with the club in 2011, is batting .172 with a .495 OPS in his second season with the Yankees.

After missing most of '12, Rivera returns to form

TORONTO -- After missing the majority of the 2012 season following season-ending surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right knee, 43-year-old Mariano Rivera has picked up right where he left off.

The Yankees closer is 5-for-5 in save opportunities and hasn't allowed a run since his first appearance of the season. Rivera was in top form for Saturday's extra-inning win against the Blue Jays, working around a leadoff double to close out the 11th inning by punching out two batters and recording the other out on a line drive.

Manager Joe Girardi said the only thing he wouldn't do with Rivera is pitch him three days in a row this early -- he has worked back-to-back games once -- but is otherwise not worried about the veteran's health.

"They have had a lot of success with knee operations and anterior cruciate ligament tears," Girardi said. "I don't really have any concerns about his knee; he passed all those tests in Spring Training."

That doesn't mean Girardi isn't impressed with what Rivera, the all-time saves leader with 613, is able to do in his 19th big league season.

"Am I a little bit surprised that he is still pitching at a high level at this age? Yeah, but not that he has come back," the skipper said.

Rivera only needs to make three appearances and pitch 2 1/3 more innings to match his workload from last season.

Worth noting

• First baseman Mark Teixeira continues to take dry swings with a light fungo bat as he works his way back from a partially torn sheath in his right wrist.

Teixeira, who made the trip to Toronto and will head with the club to St. Petersburg for the series against the Rays, has had no setbacks, Girardi said. But the skipper made sure to point out that Teixeira's rehab will be a slow process.
