Girardi: Yanks will keep close eye on Jeter

ST. PETERSBURG -- Derek Jeter is expected to be in the Yankees' clubhouse for Monday's game against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, and manager Joe Girardi said that there is little time to work the captain in slowly.

Games are at a premium with just a little over a month remaining on the schedule, so while the Yankees will again tell Jeter to take it easy on his right calf whenever possible, they are also expecting results quickly following his Minor League rehab stint at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

"He has played three days in a row. From everything I understand, he felt pretty good," Girardi said. "I don't know if we can afford to be apprehensive."

Including Saturday's game, Jeter went 3-for-9 with two runs scored, a double, one RBI and a walk in his three games during his latest stint at Triple-A. Girardi said that he was told Jeter "ran under control," meaning short of 100 percent.

"I'll talk to him," Girardi said. "I'll talk to our people and see how he ran down there. We'll see. He's still going to have to be smart."

Girardi said that he had not yet spoken to general manager Brian Cashman, but it is likely that the Yankees will trim a pitcher from their roster to create room for Jeter. New York is carrying 13 pitchers after recalling right-hander Preston Claiborne to replace the injured Jayson Nix last week.

In what he has described as a "nightmare" season, Jeter has played in just five big league games due to left ankle, right quadriceps and right calf injuries. He injured his right quadriceps on July 11 in his first game back following the ankle injury, then felt the strain his calf soon after returning from the quad strain on July 28.

"We're just going to go day by day, and see what I see the night before, and make the decision the next day," Girardi said.

Bombers bits

• Lyle Overbay returned to the Yankees' lineup on Sunday after a two-day bout with flu-like symptoms. Girardi said that the club's hope is that the issues are behind Overbay, who came in with seven hits in his last 22 at-bats.

• Robinson Cano entered play on Sunday having hit safely in 16 of his last 19 games since Aug. 5, batting .397 (29-for-73) with 10 runs, six doubles, two homers, 12 RBIs and eight walks over that span.

• On this date in 1996, the Yankees unveiled a monument in honor of Mickey Mantle. On this date in 2011, Cano, Russell Martin and Curtis Granderson each hit grand slams in a 22-9 rout of the Athletics as the Yankees became the first team to hit three grand slams in a game.

Girardi affirms Monday as Jeter's target date

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Yankees expect to activate shortstop Derek Jeter and have him in the lineup for their game on Monday against the Blue Jays in Toronto, manager Joe Girardi said on Saturday.

Jeter went 1-for-3 with a single on Saturday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in what the Yankees expect will be the third and final Minor League rehabilitation game of this most recent stint. Jeter played seven innings at shortstop.

After dash home, Jeter feels he's 'ready to go'

MOOSIC, Pa. -- Just when it looked as if Derek Jeter wouldn't get much of an opportunity on Friday night to test his strained right calf on the basepaths, the Yankees' captain found himself breaking hard for home plate on a wild pitch and sliding in safely just ahead of the throw.

Playing in his second rehab game with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Jeter caught a break in his final plate appearance when Pawtucket first baseman Drew Sutton missed a throw from shortstop Heiker Meneses on what should have been a routine double play. Instead, the ball skipped off Sutton's glove, allowing Jeter to reach safely and advance to second with only one out.

Jeter moved to third one batter later on a groundout to the right side of the infield, setting the stage for his dash to home plate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's 4-1 win.

"I was running fine," said Jeter, who is expected to play one more game with Scranton on Saturday as he continues working his way back from a Grade 1 strain. "I don't ever try to give a percentage -- I don't know how people figure that out -- but I ran. I'm not concerned about running. Everything felt good."

Facing a knuckleballer for the second time in as many nights at a standing-room-only PNC Field, Jeter went hitless in four plate appearances, the last of which came against reliever Brock Huntzinger. Against veteran knuckleball starter Charlie Haeger, Jeter struck out looking in the first, grounded into a double play in the third and worked a walk in the fifth.

Following the two-out walk, Jeter advanced to second on a walk to Dan Johnson, but he was stranded there when Randy Ruiz struck out with the bases loaded to end the frame.

"You're facing a knuckleball, so you just kind of throw everything out the window," Jeter said. "[On Saturday], I'll get the chance to see some normal pitches, which is good. But I feel good. I feel like I'm ready to go."

Currently in the midst of his third rehab stint this year, Jeter missed the entire first half of the season while recovering from offseason surgery on his left ankle. In his July 11 season debut, the shortstop injured his right quad and landed back on the disabled list. He returned on July 28 but played just four games before going back on the DL with the strained calf that has sidelined him since Aug. 3.

Jeter, 39, confirmed that the plan is to play one more rehab game in Scranton on Saturday and, if all goes well, rejoin the big league club for Monday's series opener in Toronto. The Yankees will play an afternoon game against the Rays in St. Petersburg on Sunday.

"You feel more and more comfortable the more you play," Jeter said. "Like I said before, I understand I have to play some games here. I'll play one more [on Saturday], and hopefully, everything is good and I keep getting more comfortable."

Comfortable seemed to be the word of the night for Jeter as he sat at his locker postgame with the troublesome calf wrapped -- and the captain's attitude seemed to fall into that category as well. Jeter often flashed a smile while fielding questions from the media, and he even cracked a joke regarding President Barack Obama.

"Oh yeah, earlier today," Jeter teased before shaking his head when asked if he met up with Obama, who was visiting the Scranton area on Friday. Obama's Air Force One flight could be seen departing the area during the second inning.

Though he had few opportunities to test his calf on the bases on Friday night, Jeter converted a handful of chances in the field. One night after committing an error on one of just two balls hit to him, Jeter successfully fielded a pair of groundouts, caught a hard-hit line drive, recorded a putout at second base on a fielder's-choice groundout and even made a stop on a ball deep up the middle, though he had no play on it.

Jeter also showed good range on his two converted grounders before catching a fifth-inning liner that was hit directly to him. One hitter after recording the putout at second, Jeter ended the second inning by making a stop on a ball hit up the middle and rifling a throw to first base that just beat Pawtucket right fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker. Two innings later, Jeter charged a slow-rolling grounder and made the play to end the fourth inning.

"It's all plays that I've done working out, but it's different when you're doing it in games and have guys actually running," Jeter said. "So it's good to do it in a game situation, but I have worked on it. I try to work on every possible scenario when I'm working out, but game speed, it's a little bit different."

With a pair of hits on Thursday night and plenty of fielding chances to go along with the 90-foot sprint and slide into home on Friday, Jeter said he doesn't have anything specific he wants to accomplish on Saturday in what he hopes will be his final game at Triple-A.

"I don't know if there's really a checklist of things that I have to do," Jeter said. "I'll just come and play another game and hopefully, just keep feeling more and more comfortable. Then we'll go from there."

After Gardner's HBP, Yanks request X-rays

ST. PETERSBURG -- Brett Gardner said that the Yankees asked him to go for precautionary tests after the outfielder was hit on his right hand during Friday's 7-2 loss to the Rays at Tropicana Field.

Gardner was drilled by a 95-mph Chris Archer fastball in the third inning. Gardner stayed in the game, ripping a triple off Archer in the sixth and legging out an infield hit against Jamey Wright in the eighth.

Still, the Yankees would prefer to be cautious, as Gardner said the hand is slightly swollen. He left Tropicana Field wearing an ice wrap.

"It's the same hand I broke in Double-A ball [in 2007]," Gardner said. "It's not too bad, so I'm not too worried about it."

New York lost infielder Jayson Nix to a left hand fracture after he was hit by an 80-mph R.A. Dickey pitch on Wednesday. The Yankees' Curtis Granderson and Francisco Cervelli have also been sent to the disabled list this year with broken hands.

"You're worried about it," manager Joe Girardi said. "Any time you get hit in the hand, we haven't had too good of luck with that this year. You're concerned."

Rays' farewell gift to 'Sandman' a fitting one

ST. PETERSBURG -- Mariano Rivera crouched in front of his likeness in the rotunda area at Tropicana Field, grinning as he examined one of the most unusual and unique tributes the Yankees' closer has received during his retirement farewell tour.

Enter Sandman, indeed. The Rays unveiled a large sand sculpture depicting Rivera winding up for a pitch, his body and glove surrounded by the Manhattan skyline. The work of art will be on display for fans to see through this weekend's series.

Soriano happy to be where he first learned to win

NEW YORK -- The Yankees team that welcomed back Alfonso Soriano on July 26, and that is now benefiting from his offense, is very different from the club that traded him to the Rangers for Alex Rodríguez prior to the 2004 season.
 
And Soriano, 37, also is a very different player now.
 
At the time of the A-Rod trade, Soriano was a rising star at second base, and the Yankees, coming off their sixth World Series appearance in eight years, were more than willing to open their wallet to procure the best available talent.
 
Fast forward 10 years and Soriano, now a seasoned outfielder, is breathing new life into a more frugal Yankees team -- a team that faced a seven-game deficit in the American League East when it acquired the veteran in a trade with the Cubs.  
 
On Wednesday night, Soriano's two-run shot in the eighth inning was the difference in New York's 4-2 win over Toronto. The Dominican native, who entered play Thursday hitting .284 in 24 games for the Yankees, was named the Player of the Week in the American League on Monday after a torrid seven days in which he clobbered five home runs, drove in 18 runs and scored another nine. The Yankees went 5-2 during that stretch. 
 
"I'm happy, primarily because I was able to help the team have a good week, which is the most important thing," Soriano said during a media conference with Spanish language media at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Yankees saw themselves 11 1/2 games out of first place in their division on Aug. 7, but thanks in part to Soriano, they won nine out of 11 to pull within 6 1/2 games of first-place Boston entering Thursday's action.
 
Soriano, who made his Major League debut with the Yankees in 1999 and has since played for the Rangers, Nationals and Cubs, is having a different experience with New York this time around.
 
"It's somewhat different. When I was here [the first time], I was one of the youngsters. Now I'm one of the veterans on the team," said Soriano. 
 
What has not changed, at least for Soriano, is the perception that the Yankees are not to be ruled out, even when the team appears to be struggling. The club's commitment to winning now and his memories of the Bronx were enough to convince the veteran to waive his no-trade clause with the Cubs and accept the move. 
 
"It was a great satisfaction … that the Yankees, the team where I got started, wanted my services again," said Soriano. "Especially being with Chicago, which is a very good organization, but it's thinking about the future. I'm interested in the present, given my age." 
 
Soriano, who hit .254 with 17 homers and 51 RBIs in 93 games for the Cubs this year, says he did not think twice about rejoining the Yankees despite the standings in the AL East and that other teams were interested in him. 
 
"For me, it was easier to come to this team that I know and a team that, even though things get ugly at times, always finds a way to move forward and never gives up," said Soriano. "This Yankees team is like that."
 
Soriano has reinvigorated the Yankees in the midst of a postseason race, and the team's recent surge has him hopeful. 
 
"If we keep playing the way we have, we have a good chance," said Soriano. "There are [36] games left. If our offense, defense and pitching keep it up, we have a good shot.
 
"I'm happy to be here. My first years here were a big factor in my decision to come back. The first three years that I played here were wonderful. I've always enjoyed winning, and I learned that with this organization."
