Matheny challenges, but Ellsbury's steal stands

Written By limadu on Selasa, 27 Mei 2014 | 14.24

ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals manager Mike Matheny used his sixth challenge of the season in an attempt to erase a 12th-inning baserunner, but he was ultimately unsuccessful, as there was no clear evidence to overturn Jacoby Ellsbury's swipe of second.

Ellsbury, the first Yankees player to reach base since the eighth, opened the inning with a walk and then attempted to steal on Randy Choate's third pitch to Brian McCann. Ellsbury was ruled safe by second-base umpire Larry Vanover, who was then visited by Matheny.

Matheny asked for a review of the play, which stood after a one-minute, 23-second review. The steal was Ellsbury's team-best 12th of the season. Yadier Molina had earlier thrown out Brett Gardner.

Matheny is now 2-4 with his managerial challenges.

Konerko helps White Sox pay tribute to Jeter

Written By limadu on Senin, 26 Mei 2014 | 14.25

CHICAGO -- Four days worth of standing ovations and well-deserved plaudits thrown in the direction of Derek Jeter culminated Sunday afternoon with the White Sox honoring the Yankees' captain before his last game at U.S. Cellular Field, which resulted in a 7-1 New York victory.

The ceremony began approximately 30 minutes before first pitch with a video tribute to Jeter played on the center-field scoreboard and then moved quickly into the gift portion. Jeter received a Yankees bench made out of bats and balls, expertly crafted by Ron Kittle, who played for both the White Sox and Yankees during his 10-year big league career.

Jeter also was given infield clay removed three days ago from shortstop of the U.S. Cellular Field infield, along with a plaque featuring his name listed among the Hall of Fame shortstops and likely future Hall of Fame shortstops to play in the history of Comiskey Park and the current White Sox venue.

That list consisted of Luke Appling, Pee Wee Reese, Luis Aparicio, Cal Ripken Jr., Lou Boudreau, Phil Rizzuto, Ozzie Smith, Barry Larkin, Robin Yount, Omar Vizquel and Jeter. The team then presented a check for $5,000 to Jeter's Turn 2 Foundation.

Paul Konerko represented the White Sox in the gift presentations, with the two shaking hands and embracing behind home plate. It seems only fitting that one captain would help salute another, with Konerko coming to the end of his 16-year run with the White Sox at the close of the '14 campaign.

"I was happy that Konerko was out there," Jeter said. "He's a guy that you know I respect as much as anyone in the game and what he's done for that organization."

"Throughout baseball, they have similar respect from opposing players," said Robin Ventura, who played alongside Jeter and has managed Konerko for the past three seasons. "That's one thing that they have [in common] -- the respect of the way they went about their business when they play and being there every day."

A sellout crowd of 39,142 in attendance for the finale of this four-game series gave Jeter a standing ovation, while the White Sox and their coaching staff stood on the top step of their dugout applauding. Jeter tipped his cap to the fans and the opposition and then notched three singles and a triple for his 45th career game with four or more hits.

Another standing ovation came for Jeter prior to his last at-bat in the eighth. The crowd stood and cheered again after Scott Carroll struck out Jeter.

Honoring Jeter certainly was warranted. The man has produced 3,362 hits, while contributing to five World Series titles, all the while handling a taxing position such as shortstop in New York for two decades. Jeter has been as classy and important to the game off the field as he has been productive on the field.

But such a celebration comes with its own case of weird dynamics.

When Jeter was getting his final standing ovation, Carroll didn't know whether to stand behind the mound and let Jeter take it in for a few moments or get right back into action. Catcher Tyler Flowers said that when Jeter received his first ovation Thursday night, he turned to the White Sox catcher and the home-plate umpire and said, 'All right. Let's go. Let's go.'"

"Of course he likes the spotlight, so to speak, because he's always in it, but he doesn't want it necessarily," said Flowers. "He comes up to the plate, asks me how I'm doing, all that. He still respects the game, respects everyone in it, plays the right way. It just seems to be first class all the way, it's not a show. He really is a good guy."

Barring a postseason series, Jeter's final moment on the U.S. Cellular Field diamond was an Alejandro De Aza line drive to Alfonso Soriano in right. It simply represents the end of one small part of the great baseball run in Jeter's life.

"You even look at the start of the game and everything that happened before the game, it's a little weird," Ventura said. "I mean, you see that happen, but he's not dying, he's just retiring. I'm sure it's uncomfortable for him going through all of it, but he's a great player.

"It's totally warranted but it's a little weird. Seeing it today, you hear about it, but seeing it today, it is a little weird because he's just going to start living."

Jeter agreed with Ventura, saying he's not going to fall off the face of the earth after retirement. But he appreciated the gifts and the Chicago sentiment.

"I've always enjoyed coming to Chicago and playing here," said Jeter, who is a career .299 hitter against the White Sox. "I haven't played at Wrigley too much, but every year coming here, it's one of my favorite cities. The way the fans have treated me these two series here, it's been tremendous. It's something I'll always remember.

"I never expect anything. I don't expect things when I go to different cities and different stadiums. Fans have always been respectful. Even earlier in my career, they may hate the Yankees or cheer against us, but they've always been respectful."

Tanaka capable of big things, carrying Yanks

CHICAGO -- One win down for Masahiro Tanaka -- and another 41 starts until his next regular-season loss?

Silly question, sure. But with a pitcher as talented, confident, driven, focused and successful as Tanaka, you better keep an open mind about exactly what he is capable of doing in the Major Leagues.

On a gorgeous Sunday afternoon in Chicago, eight miles away from Wrigley Field, where the Cubs ruined his perfect record last Tuesday, the $175 million Japanese pitcher demonstrated why he might just pitch the Yankees into the playoffs.

He shut down one of baseball's most productive lineups in one of the best parks for hitters -- although it is worth noting the White Sox were without Jose Abreu and the wind was blowing in softly off Lake Michigan. So there.

But mostly the tough day for Chicago hitters spoke to the guy who was on the mound for the first 6 2/3 innings.

"I feel good every time he takes the mound,'' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He finds a way to get it done. I thought he pitched another good game today, got out of trouble with some double-play balls. You have to get those as well. He gave us some distance and did a good job.''

There is nothing particularly spectacular about his final pitching line (6 2/3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO), but if you witnessed the 7-1 victory, you know Tanaka did what the big horses do -- pretty much denying the White Sox hope after he was given an early lead by Derek Jeter and other teammates.

Tanaka (7-1) did seem to tire the third time around the order, but then he got strikeouts when he needed them. Conor Gillaspie, the left-handed-hitting third baseman, was the only White Sox hitter who looked comfortable against him. He went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and an RBI against Tanaka; the rest of the lineup was 3-for-20.

This marked the 10th consecutive quality start for Tanaka. He's the first Major League pitcher to start his career in that fashion since Montreal's Steve Rogers in 1973, and the first Yankees pitcher to do it since at least 1914.

No wonder Girardi feels good when he's on the mound.

This was only the fourth time that Tanaka was starting on four days' rest -- one day fewer than the normal schedule in Japan. Girardi acknowledged that Tanaka might have gotten tired late in his 118-pitch afternoon. But Tanaka denied that he was winded at any point.

"No fatigue,'' he told reporters through his interpreter.

And no surprise he would say that, either.

Tanaka is a very proud man. You don't have to listen to him long to know that. Some might have had questions about how well he would do in the Major Leagues, but he was not one of those people.

Girardi talked earlier in the week about how much Tanaka demands from himself, a trait that Girardi has seen in other great players. The margin of error for the best is always small, and that's the way it is with Tanaka, who carried the Rakuten Golden Eagles to a Japan Series championship last year.

Facing the Cubs for the second time, Tanaka wasn't himself Tuesday at Wrigley Field. He struck out seven in six innings but gave up eight hits, with the Cubs doing a good job laying off his splitter, which starts at the bottom of the strike zone and dives. His defense didn't help him much either, with Mark Teixeira making an error, Mike Olt crushing a shot past a drawn-in Jeter and Luis Valbuena getting a pair of hits to left field, defying Girardi's shift.

It was an impressive showing for the Cubs' hitters, and Tanaka took the setback hard. Like many great pitchers before him -- Roger Clemens jumps to mind -- Tanaka refused to give batters any credit for their success, saying, "All my balls, my pitches, went to a location which was easy for the batters to hit.''

Tanaka, who had gone 34-0 in 42 regular-season starts since Aug. 19, 2012, seemed genuinely stunned to have lost a game. He said on Sunday that he was "disappointed'' but not necessarily angry about having his streak ended.

He was asked how the loss affected him.

"It's hard to say,'' he said. "I think, obviously, with the loss against the Cubs, I did really want to go out there and get us a win. That's pretty much all I can say.''

The Yankees won't have CC Sabathia back until July, if then. They will learn this week if Carlos Beltran needs surgery to repair a bone spur in his elbow. The age of their team, the fragile balance that is their existence, is never far from view.

But Girardi and pitching coach Larry Rothschild have built a bullpen that is a weapon. Girardi uses the players he has brilliantly and is tireless in his preparation. With Tanaka, he might have a trump card that can carry him a long way, maybe even to the American League East title.

It's too bad George Steinbrenner isn't around to appreciate Tanaka. Like the old man himself, this is a guy who does not like losing.

Thornton recognized by White Sox with nice gesture

Written By limadu on Minggu, 25 Mei 2014 | 14.25

By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com | 5/24/2014 7:36 P.M. ET

CHICAGO -- Matt Thornton received a heads-up from a White Sox staffer early on Friday that the team was planning to honor his time at U.S. Cellular Field with a brief video tribute. The Yankees reliever's response, as he recalls, was: "Are you kidding?"

It was no joke. Thornton was pushed out of the visiting dugout between innings of Friday's 6-5 Yankees loss to the White Sox, acknowledging the applause that accompanied a scoreboard message appreciating his 7 1/2 seasons with the Pale Hose from 2006-13.

"After playing there for so long, they know that I don't like stuff like that, about me," Thornton said. "I get very uncomfortable when things like that go on. They kind of ambushed me, and were like, 'Hey, whether you like it or not.' It was nice to see my teammates and the staff over there, [trainer] Herb Schneider, John Danks and Chris Sale having fun with it, clapping for me. It was nice."

Thornton said that he has good memories of Chicago; his daughter, Avery, was born while he was with the White Sox, and he was a 2010 American League All-Star here. Thornton also lists Mark Buehrle's perfect game and no-hitter, Phil Humber's perfect game and Jim Thome's 500th home run as some of his favorite White Sox moments.

"I wish we would have won more," Thornton said. "We had a lot of great guys, a lot of great friends over there. I thought we had some really good teams at times. We made the playoffs once [in 2008] in my time there, but I have a lot of great memories."

In his first year with the Yankees, Thornton is hoping to get back on track after a sharp beginning to the campaign. He was 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA in 20 appearances entering Saturday, and he has allowed four earned runs in his last six outings (2 2/3 innings) after allowing just one earned run through his first 14 appearances.

"I'm just trying to find consistency for myself," Thornton said. "Everybody knows I get a batter, maybe two. I think four or five batters is the most I've faced in one outing. It's a different transition I've gone over in the last couple of years of my career. I understand it and I enjoy it, but at the same time, I need to get those outs. They're big outs, big situations, and I need to make sure that I do my job."

Robertson bounces back from first blown save

CHICAGO -- David Robertson flung his arms up in frustration after leaving a pitch over the heart of the plate to Adam Dunn in the ninth inning on Friday, and the Yankees' closer immediately wanted the ball back, ready to turn the page to his next outing.

Robertson only had to wait a few hours. He was back on the mound at U.S. Cellular Field on Saturday afternoon, bouncing back from his first blown save of the season by locking down the 10th inning in New York's 4-3 victory over the White Sox.

"Definitely, I wanted to do good," Robertson said. "I wanted to get us a win and seal the deal. I was able to get it done."

Having a short memory is a necessity for a closer, and Robertson -- who has converted 10 of 11 save opportunities this season -- had a front-row seat to watch one of the best. He often marveled at how Mariano Rivera seemed to be the same person, win or lose, and considers that a perfect model to emulate.

"He was the same guy every day," Robertson said. "He could blow two or three in a row and you wouldn't notice a difference. He knows he's going to get the opportunity to go out there and redeem himself, so he would just focus on what he had to do the next time."

Robertson struck out three batters in the 10th inning on Saturday, working around a two-out Adam Eaton single. He froze Gordon Beckham on a called third strike to end the game.

"I've been a reliever pretty much my whole career, even in college," Robertson said. "You have bad games there, too. You definitely want to get back out there and do good, you want to perform well always. Sometimes the game gets you, but you have to overcome that when you have bad games and be ready to pitch."

Roberts out of lineup after fouling ball off knee

CHICAGO -- Brian Roberts was not in the Yankees' lineup on Saturday, one day after fouling a ball off his right kneecap, but manager Joe Girardi believes that the second baseman is available to come off the bench.

Roberts hurt his knee in the fourth inning of New York's 6-5 loss to the White Sox, and stayed in the game until the ninth, when he was replaced by Brendan Ryan at second base.

Ryan started at second base on Saturday, and Girardi said that Roberts "is a player today for me in case of emergency." X-rays taken on Roberts' knee Friday at U.S. Cellular Field were negative.

"Any time you hit something off your kneecap, you worry about it; you're concerned you could have a crack or [it could] shatter," Girardi said. "It's a sensitive area, but for the most part, he feels pretty decent. He's sore, but there's really no swelling. Hopefully, we won't need him today and he'll be a player tomorrow."

Bombers bits

• Left-hander Vidal Nuno and catcher John Ryan Murphy were paired together as Saturday's battery, and Girardi said that he has been pleased by how they have worked as a team.

"They've seemed to do a pretty good job together. That's kind of worked out," Girardi said. "There's been a lot of lefties in those situations. I've said, if you're going to give a guy a day off, a lot of times it's easier if they're catching the same guy all the time. I've tried to do that if I can."

• On this date in 1936, the Yankees set a franchise record in runs scored in a game, defeating the A's 25-2 at Shibe Park. Tony Lazzeri hit three homers (including two grand slams) and a triple, setting a still-standing AL record with 11 RBIs. Lazzeri is the only Yankees player ever to hit two grand slams in a game.

• Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda (right shoulder muscle injury) threw batting practice on Saturday in Tampa, Fla., tossing 28 pitches. Pineda's next step could be a Minor League rehab game, but that decision has not yet been made.

In the event any Postseason Game is cancelled, postponed or suspended, all Bingo Cards will be void for that game and Sponsor reserves the right to award the applicable Prizes by way of random drawing from among all eligible participants as of the time of such cancellation, postponement or suspension.

PRIZE CLAIMS: In the event you receive a message within MLB.com Gameday notifying you that you have a Potential Winning Bingo Card, you must claim your Potential Winning Bingo Card by following the onscreen instructions provided by no later than ten (10) minutes following the end of the applicable Postseason Game to be eligible for the Drawing (defined below). Failure to claim your Potential Winning Bingo Card within ten (10) minutes following the end of the applicable Postseason Game will render the Potential Winning Bingo Card void and result in Prize forfeiture.

ALL POTENTIAL WINNING BINGO CARDS ARE SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION BY SPONSOR WHOSE DECISIONS ARE FINAL AND BINDING. AN ENTRANT IS NOT A WINNER OF ANY PRIZE, EVEN IF THE PROMOTION SHOULD SO INDICATE, UNLESS AND UNTIL ENTRANT'S ELIGIBILITY, THE POTENTIAL WINNING BINGO CARD AND ENTRANT'S COMPLIANCE WITH THESE OFFICIAL RULES HAVE BEEN VERIFIED BY SPONSOR AND ENTRANT HAS BEEN NOTIFIED THAT SUCH VERIFICATION IS COMPLETE. SPONSOR WILL NOT ACCEPT SCREEN SHOTS OR OTHER EVIDENCE OF WINNING IN LIEU OF ITS VALIDATION PROCESS.

RANDOM DRAWINGS: Approximately thirty (30) minutes following the final out of each Postseason Game, five (5) potential winners will be selected by random drawing from among all eligible participants who claim valid Potential Winning Bingo Cards for that Postseason Game in accordance with these Official Rules (the "Drawing"). Subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with the terms of these Official Rules, the potential winners will be declared official winners of the Sweepstakes (each, a "Winner" and collectively, the "Winners"). Limit one (1) Prize per person, per family and per household.

Total ARV of all Prizes: $3172.85.

For the avoidance of doubt, no Prizes will be awarded in connection with any 2012 MLB Postseason game that is not played because it is not necessary.

NOTIFICATION:  Each potential winner will be notified at the e-mail address, postal address and/or telephone number (in the sole discretion of Sponsor) provided at the time of entry (the "Prize Notification"). Each potential winner may be required to submit his/her valid social security number and/or other identification to Sponsor and may be required to execute, have notarized and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and Release of Liability and, unless prohibited by law, Publicity, within five (5) days of date of issuance.
