MLB issues statement on Bronx tarp malfunction

NEW YORK -- After a tarp malfunction at Yankee Stadium contributed to the calling of Wednesday night's game, leaving the Yankees with a 2-1 victory over the Rangers after 4 1/2 innings, Major League Baseball released an official statement in response on Thursday.

"Last night's game was called because of the sudden onset of extreme rain, which affected the ability of the grounds crew to put the tarp in place," the statement said. "Because no 'malfunction of a mechanical field device,' as prescribed in Official Baseball Rule 4.12(a)(3), contributed to the unfortunate circumstances, the game did not meet any criteria to be suspended.

"We trust the judgment of last night's Umpires, who deemed the field unplayable despite the legitimate effort of the sufficiently-staffed grounds crew to cover it. Because of the condition of the field following the heavy storms, we believe the right decision was made from a player safety standpoint."

MLB cited official Baseball Rule 4.12(a)(3) on suspended games, which states:
(a) A game shall become a suspended game that must be completed at a future date if the game is terminated for any of the following reasons:
(3) Light failure or malfunction of a mechanical field device under the control of the home club. (Mechanical field device shall include automatic tarpaulin or water removal equipment.)

It took the Yankee Stadium grounds crew nearly 15 minutes and two attempts to properly apply the tarp to cover the field during a rain delay, and by the time the crew succeeded, the infield dirt was soaked.

The Rangers were not pleased and looked into protesting the decision. Though they could not protest, manager Ron Washington said the club did file a complaint.

Washington said the game should have been suspended, to be finished at a later date. The two teams concluded their four-game set on Thursday -- a game won by the Yankees, 4-2 -- and they will play a three-game series in Texas next week.

"We lost a four-inning game because of the ground situation," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said on Wednesday night. "That shouldn't happen."

The Yankees lost a rain-shortened game to the Orioles on July 13, their final game before the All-Star break, and manager Joe Girardi said he would be in favor of having the rule changed so teams can continue a game the next day or whenever they were scheduled to play each other next -- unless the washed-out game is the last meeting of the season.

"If that's the case and it's the last day," Girardi said, "then it is what it is."

Yanks land lefty Capuano from Rockies

NEW YORK -- The Yankees continued to stay busy on the transaction front Thursday, acquiring left-hander Chris Capuano from the Rockies in exchange for cash considerations.

Capuano, 35, was signed as a free agent by the Rockies on July 4 and made four starts between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Colorado Springs, posting a 1-0 record with a 2.79 ERA.

Earlier this year, the veteran lefty went 1-1 with a 4.55 ERA in 28 relief appearances for the Red Sox before being released.

Capuano has a career record of 74-84 with a 4.28 ERA in 266 games (209 starts) over 10 Major League seasons with the D-backs (2003), Brewers (2004-07, '10), Mets (2011), Dodgers (2012-13) and Red Sox (2014).

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has said that the team is actively looking to upgrade the roster, both significantly as well as with smaller incremental transactions.

Already this month, New York has acquired right-hander Brandon McCarthy, left-hander Jeff Francis, infielder Chase Headley and now Capuano, while releasing outfielder Alfonso Soriano.

Cashman prioritizes adding bat before August

NEW YORK -- The reformulated Yankees rotation has performed better than Brian Cashman would have anticipated, and the general manager said that he'd prefer to focus his attention on acquiring a big bat as the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline approaches.

"It's weird," Cashman said in an interview with ESPN New York 98.7 FM. "Our pitching has been drastically altered because of the injuries, and despite losing four out of five starters and all that stuff, our pitching has survived -- surprisingly -- to this point. I think our offense should be better.

"It still feels like the pitching needs more help, but honestly, the offense has been consistently poor throughout the entire year. The answer has to be an offensive piece, I guess."

The Yankees believe they upgraded their infield this week by acquiring Chase Headley from the Padres, but they could also use a right-handed-hitting outfielder. The Twins' Josh Willingham makes some sense as a potential trade target, as does the Rangers' Alex Rios.

Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury have been constants in the Yankees' outfield this year, but 40-year-old Ichiro Suzuki has faltered with regular playing time, and the team still isn't sure if Carlos Beltran will be able to return to defensive duty this year because of a bone spur in his right elbow.

Cashman also said that he does not see homegrown 23-year-old Rob Refsnyder as the answer to help a lineup that produced 395 runs through its first 100 games; entering Thursday, only the Astros (394) had scored fewer runs among American League teams this season.

Refsnyder has enjoyed some buzz at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he had a .301/.401/.497 slash line entering play on Thursday, but Cashman said that he does not believe Refsnyder would represent a significant upgrade over Brian Roberts at second base right now.

"He has a chance to be the second baseman of the future, maybe as early as next year," Cashman said, adding that if Refsnyder does see any big league time in 2014, it would likely be in the outfield. "If we can avoid it, I don't think we'd get the impact over the next two months that people would think. That jump from Triple-A to the big leagues is larger than it's ever been."

Tanaka feeling only marginal improvement

NEW YORK -- Masahiro Tanaka is still reporting discomfort in his right elbow, 10 days after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection, but the Yankees are still hopeful to have the right-hander return to the big league mound this season.

Tanaka was diagnosed with a small tear of his right ulnar collateral ligament earlier this month. Three doctors recommended a six-week rehab program instead of having Tanaka undergo Tommy John surgery.

"He's improved, but he still feels it," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said in an interview with ESPN New York 98.7 FM. "On a daily basis, it decreases, so that's good. But it's not good that he's still feeling it at this stage. We just go day by day and week by week, and we'll adjust accordingly. Right now, it's too early to call."

The Yankees have said that Tanaka would have three weeks of rest from throwing, so he would likely attempt to resume playing catch in the first week of August. After that, Tanaka would have to go through the gauntlet of bullpen sessions, batting practice and then Minor League rehab games to get back to the big leagues.

"We've got to wait three weeks to see where he's at," manager Joe Girardi said. "Then we'll probably start to have him play catch and see if he's going to be a pitcher for us. You've got to let things heal. Things don't heal overnight."

Unprecedented power for 'aggressive' Gardner

NEW YORK -- It's not a huge surprise to see Mark Teixeira leading the Yankees with 17 home runs this season, or to find power hitters Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran following him with 10 apiece. But it might be surprising to see Brett Gardner's name right there with them.

For the first time in his Major League career, Gardner has totaled double-digit home runs, having hit a career-high 10, the most recent of which came off Yu Darvish in Wednesday night's rain-shortened 2-1 victory over the Rangers.

"I thought it was possible that he would hit double digits," said manager Joe Girardi. "I would never expect him to be a guy in the 20s. But I did think double digits because I've seen his power. I've seen him in BP; I've seen him certain days that I thought it was possible."

Gardner has provided most of his pop out of the leadoff spot and has quickly grown into one of the Yankees' most versatile threats. He entered Thursday leading the team in triples with six and had 17 stolen bases, trailing only Jacoby Ellsbury, and he was tied for third on the team in RBIs (41).

Throughout his college and Minor League career, Gardner never hit more than five home runs in a season. His highest total came with the Yankees last season, when he belted eight. What's been the difference?

"Just being a little more aggressive," Gardner said after Wednesday's victory. "[I'm] trying to continue to work on my swing with [hitting coach Kevin Long], being more aggressive at the plate and taking my 'A' swing."

With Teixeira still hobbled, DL stint possible

NEW YORK -- Manager Joe Girardi said that the Yankees will likely make a roster decision regarding injured first baseman Mark Teixeira by Friday.

Thursday's series finale against the Rangers was the fourth consecutive game out of the starting lineup for Teixeira, who has a mild strain of his lower left lat. After Sunday's 3-2 win over the Reds, Teixeira underwent an MRI exam that revealed the injury.

"It's just seeing how he feels after three or four days," Girardi said. "Then we'll decide if we think it's going to be the near future that he would play or we're going to need the 15-day [disabled list]. If it's going to be 12, 13, 14 days, it probably makes sense to get a player here."

Besides receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection on Monday from Yankees team physician Christopher Ahmad, Teixeira has just been resting, hoping to heal quickly.

"I don't think tomorrow's the day," Girardi said on Thursday. "But obviously, you want to feel that there's progress and that he feels better to start doing some stuff. We felt that we'd give him three days without really doing much but treatment, and then we'd see where we're at."

Bombers bits

• Because of rain in Tampa, Fla., Michael Pineda's simulated game was moved indoors on Thursday morning. The rehabbing right-hander threw 30 pitches, facing no hitters. He will progress to throwing three innings or 45 pitches against hitters in five days.

• Derek Jeter was out of the Yankees' lineup on Thursday; Girardi said that it was a regular day off and that if it had been a night game, Jeter probably would have played.

• On this date in 1983, the Yankees and Royals played the infamous George Brett "Pine Tar" game. The Yankees' 4-3 victory was only temporary, as the game ended in protest and was resumed on Aug. 18, when the Royals completed a 5-4 win.

McCann feeling comfortable at first base

NEW YORK -- It probably wasn't the two games spent scooping throws in a long-ago high school tournament, but for whatever reason, playing a little bit of first base seems to be agreeing with Brian McCann.

With Mark Teixeira nursing a strained lat, McCann started his second consecutive game at first base on Wednesday. It marked McCann's fourth career start and ninth appearance at the position, all of which have come with the Yankees this season.

"I feel a lot more comfortable than I thought I would, to be honest with you," McCann said. "I don't know why I feel more comfortable over there than I thought, but it's a good thing."

Yankees manager Joe Girardi noted that McCann played some first base in high school, but that's a little bit of a stretch; McCann clarified that he spent most of his time catching, and only played a pair of games at first base. Most of what he is doing now is learning on the fly.

"It's just going to be pure reaction for me," McCann said. "But I feel comfortable fielding, picking, whatever I need to do."

McCann said that he has been borrowing a glove from Kelly Johnson, but he is in the process of breaking in his own model. He said that the physical break is a welcome benefit, compared to the average day of bumps and bruises from catching.

"Absolutely, it might be a way you can keep his bat in the lineup a little bit more, and he doesn't get as beat up," Girardi said.

McCann said that the most challenging part of the position so far has been the slight nuances which may not necessarily be noticed by the average observer.

"It's just knowing where to be, knowing little things about the game," McCann said. "Doing cutoffs, I may forget to do that. Last night, I forgot to follow the trail runner at second. Just doing those little parts of the game over there is different."

McCann signed a five-year, $85 million deal with the Yankees this past offseason, and when he did, the team said that they envisioned him as a catcher deep into the deal. They still do, but McCann said that he's fine with pitching in at first base, especially given the injuries to Teixeira and Johnson.

"Like I said, whatever's best for this team," McCann said. "Obviously with Tex being out, it's tough, so someone's got to fill in. I'll be that guy."

Johnson lands on DL as Yanks call up Leroux

NEW YORK -- The Yankees placed infielder-outfielder Kelly Johnson on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday with a Grade 1 strain of his left groin.

Johnson, primarily an infielder, made his first Major League start in right field Tuesday night. He sustained the injury while running out a 10th-inning ground ball in the Yankees' 2-1, 14-inning victory over the Rangers.

With the Yankees in need of pitching help after Tuesday's extra-inning affair, right-hander Chris Leroux had his contract selected from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

"We assume Kelly is going to at least be [out for] 10 days, so we make that move and go from there," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Girardi said that the Yankees needed to place Johnson on the disabled list because first baseman Mark Teixeira is nursing a left lat strain; Teixeira could take light swings on Thursday and there is hope that he would return to the lineup on Friday.

"I think you see how he feels tomorrow, then you make a decision about what would be a target date," Girardi said.

Leroux has made 65 big league appearances over six seasons with the Marlins, Pirates and Yankees. He pitched twice for New York this season, allowing five runs in two innings (22.50 ERA). At Triple-A, Leroux was 2-2 with a 5.08 ERA in six starts.

It has been a rough season for Johnson, who was expected to provide the Yankees with versatility and power. He has played five different positions, seeing most of his time at the infield corners, but has batted just .219 with six home runs and 22 RBIs in 77 games.

To make room for Leroux on the 40-man roster, New York designated right-handed pitcher Bruce Billings for assignment.

Simulated game next step for rehabbing Pineda

NEW YORK -- Michael Pineda is continuing to move along the comeback trail. The right-hander was scheduled to throw a simulated game on Wednesday, a notable step as he attempts to return to a big league mound.

Pineda threw batting practice on Sunday at the Yankees' complex in Tampa, Fla. After a promising start to his season, he has not appeared in a big league game since April 23, because of an upper back strain behind his pitching shoulder.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that Pineda was scheduled to throw two innings or 30 pitches. Pineda initially sustained the injury while throwing during his 10-game suspension for pine tar use, then had a setback while on rehab in May.

Bombers bits

• Masahiro Tanaka has reported some improvement, according to Girardi, but it will still be another two weeks before Tanaka can resume throwing. Tanaka is in the early stages of a six-week rehab program intended to heal the partial tear of his right ulnar collateral ligament.

"He did say he feels better, but I don't think you really know how he's doing until you get him on a mound and you start going forward," Girardi said.

• On this date in 1957, Mickey Mantle hit for the cycle in a 10-6 win over the White Sox, becoming the eighth Yankee to accomplish the feat. Mantle went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the game.

Rangers, Yanks derailed by unexpected deluge

NEW YORK -- When the rain started pouring with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night, it came down much more abruptly and faster than anyone anticipated.

The grounds crew had a difficult time covering the field -- at one point, a member actually was trapped underneath the tarp -- and it took two attempts to adequately cover the infield. By the time the grounds crew was successful, most of the infield was already drenched with water.

"I've never seen it when it rained so hard and so fast that it weighed down the tarp, and then the mud on the infield --[the tarp] wouldn't slide," crew chief Dale Scott said. "That dual effect is what caused the issues."

Those tarp issues are what ultimately caused the Rangers-Yankees game to be called after 4 1/2 innings and a 1 hour and 49-minute rain delay, leaving New York with a 2-1 victory.

The rain stopped for a moment and the crew went to work to repair the field, and it looked as if they had created a playable field. The game was expected to restart at approximately 10:05 p.m. ET, but that was until both Yankees manager Joe Girardi and Rangers manager Ron Washington came out to walk the basepaths and quickly disapproved.

"We felt the field was not safe, and we were waiting to see what could possibly be done," Girardi said.

Washington called the field a hamstring waiting to be pulled.

"It was sinking, it was soft, it was very soft," he said. "Especially around the basepaths, around the baselines and around each bag, and you couldn't get a lead at first base unless you were a couple feet under."

After the managers voiced their disapproval, the umpire and grounds crews weighed their options on what additional work could be done. Then the rain started again and the game was officially called a short time later.

"The surface looked great," Scott said. "Underneath, though, it was just squishy."

Scott agreed that while the grounds crew did the best they could do under the circumstances, their trouble getting the tarp on quickly enough all but sealed the decision to end the game.

The Rangers, who had their ace Yu Darvish on the mound and trailed by just one run, were not happy.

"I am watching from a time zone away, but I wasn't real pleased," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "I don't think there was any intent on anybody's part. But for the way it played out, I don't think that should happen. We lost a four-inning game because of the ground situation -- that shouldn't happen."

The Yankees escaped with a victory and did not have to use their bullpen, which was exhausted by Tuesday's 14-inning affair. They have now had two games called early due to rain, including a 3-1 loss to the Orioles the day before the All-Star break.

"I guess we kind of were owed this one after what happened in Baltimore right before the break, I feel like, and it's good." Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner said. "We'll take a win any way we can get it."

Jeter atop Yanks' doubles list with No. 535

With the Yankee Stadium crowd chanting his name amid a scoreless tie, Derek Jeter rose to the occasion on Tuesday night in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Rangers, adding another milestone to his collection.

Although his hit didn't lead to a run in New York's 2-1 win, Jeter ripped a one-out double down the left-field line off lefty Neal Cotts, passing Lou Gehrig with No. 535 to take over the Yankees' all-time doubles lead.

On the all-time Major League leaderboard, Jeter stands in 36th place; Al Simmons and David Ortiz are next with 539.

Carlos Beltran grounded into an inning-ending double play two batters later, sending the game to extra innings. It was Jeter's first double since July 1, a home game against the Rays.

Call at first overturned after Wash's challenge

NEW YORK -- A successful challenge by Rangers manager Ron Washington left the Yankees with five errors through seven innings on Monday.

The Yankees had committed four errors, including three by starting pitcher Shane Greene, when Adrian Beltre led off the seventh against reliever Adam Warren with a grounder to shortstop Derek Jeter.

Jeter's throw to first beat Beltre, but first baseman Kelly Johnson had to stretch for it. First-base umpire Quinn Wolcott called Beltre out, but Washington challenged the call and got it overturned. Jeter was given an error, his eighth of the season.
